Love those 80's!

I was the damned remote for my dad... up,,up,,up,,up,,go gack,,up,,up OMG would you please pick a channel dad!

Now my grandma had a "clicker" when you pushed the button it clicked... it was amazing, I didn't have to stand next to the tv for hours. And when grandma wanted to watch Lawrence Welk, everyone else in the family would get out their keys and jingle them so the channel would change... LOL she used to get so mad. But you know I loved that TV, we watched the Wonderful World of Disney every Sun night on it :goodvibes

OK, as promised, here are the scans from Mrs. TCD's Grad Night at WDW in 1982.

This scrapbook page got me to thinking. The early 80's were so different from the later 80's. In the early 80's we had a bit of an Urban Cowboy fad, and then it was Miami Vice. Even early MTV was way different from where it went later in the decade.

Anyway, here you go:

This is a scan of the park map that Mrs. TCD had in here scrapbook. This scrapbook was one of those "magnetic" photo albums, and you will see that the magic page took off some of the ink. The rest of the photos seem to be permanently fused to the pages, so I just scanned the entire page:

Some things to look for:

Mrs. TCD is the blond in the green dress in the formal photo, and has the yellow on in the other photos.

Mrs. TCD's BFF has a sweet Lacoste windbreaker. Lacoste was quite the trend around these parts in the early 80's. At least until those Members Only jackets showed up (don't tell me you don't remember those).

The Grad Night admission ticket shows admission was $12. Admission for my DD's Grad Night this year will be over $50. This also will be the first year that is will be held at Hollywood Studios. Musical acts include Metro Station (fronted by Miley Cyrus' brother) and Katy Perry, among others.

Anybody remember Tommy Tutone? Me neither. But I do remember Jenny 867-5309. How about Michael Iceberg and the Iceberg Machine? What? Man, I wish I could have seen that!

Bertie Higgins was huge in 1982. He happens to be from a town right up the road from me here (Tarpon Springs, FL). The poor guy is the epitome of a one hit wonder. A year or so ago, we were driving down one of the major roads around here, and there was a concert going on under a tent in a supermarket parking lot. Guess who it was? Bertie Higgins. Still with the long hair, and Key Largo.

Don't miss the let's get physical headband sported by Mrs. TCD's other BFF.

TCD

That's fantastic TCD! Should I admit that there is a members only jacket hanging in my closet? (ahem, on my hubby's side :rolleyes1 )

That is so cool that your DD can now make her own scrapbook of her grad night....I'd love to see a comparison to Mrs TCD's own memories.

thanks for sharing, this was very neat....love the headband, too! :lmao:

Great photos TCD...thanks for sharing. You're right about the differences between early/late 80's! My sister graduated in 80, my brother in 85 and me in 91...big difference in styles between the 3 of us!!

(edit...) I also had 2 brothers who graduated in the 70's...whoa, now thats a time in warp style! ;)

That's the one thing I've noticed about the decades. "The 50's" were really the early/mid-50s through the early 60's, "the 60's" were the mid-60's through early 70's... It's never really the entire decade but a flowing from one to the next. My big hair was actually more toward the late 80's. I still had the feathered look in '84 when I graduated high school.

Funny someone mentioned the remote control. My DD and I were watching Nick at Night a while back and the commercial came on and said "Don't turn that dial -- we'll be right back!" and my DD looked at me and said "What dial? What's he talking about?" I just about fell over realizing she truly had no idea. I began to explain only having 7 channels, plus UHF (anyone remember Uncle Floyd!?) and having to get up off the couch each time you wanted to change the channel, change the volume or turn the TV off. She was horrified. :scared1: Our first cable "remote" was actually a box that was connected to the TV by a 6 foot cord. The box had, I believe three rows of buttons and you had to move the switch on the far left down each row in order to access those channels. Man I thought we were the coolest 'cause we had cable!

DEB...YES YES YES!!! And Im impressed by YOU knowing this, but I forgot, you actually are from up north arent you??? NEW YORK GROOVE by KISS is correct, well...ACE FREHLEY to be more precise. Remember whhen they all did their solo albums? Thats when that song surfaced.....I had it on(ahem) 45 and played that thing over and over and over!!! The b-side was "Snowblind" and it just wasnt very catchy...pretty much like the rest of the album.

But are you serious? You dont remember TOMMY TUTONE???? The high school math teacher whos only hit was titled with, what else...NUMBERS. 867-5309 was a pretty risque song for its time...a guy fantasizing about a girl whose number he found on the bathroom wall...whoa, Tommy...get a life, dude!!! And who hasnt dialed that number to see who answers? That song will be on EVERY 80s compilation from here to eternity!!

But what I cant believe HASN'T been mentioned was THE POINTER SISTERS!!!! That was the BIGGEST NAME on that ticket...have you ALL forgotten the POINTER SISTERS??? They had dozens of 80s dance hits like "Im So Excited" "Neutron Dance" "Fire" "Break out" "Jump For My Love" "He's So Shy" "Slow Hand" and Im sure theres more that aint popping in my head right now....but how can you forget the scene where the HOT pointer sister was getting up out of the bubble bath in the
IM SO EXCITED

Yes, I remember the song, but I sure don't remember the name of the band. Is Tommy Tutone the lead singer? I guess they were one hit wonders too.

As I search the cobwebs of my mind trying to remember the video to Jenny, you know what song I remembered? Centerfold by the J. Geils Band (they also had Freeze Frame). Anyone remember that one? I remember this was one of the videos that made me realize that a lot of these pre-MTV bands really had faces for the radio! I remember the lead singer on this video was down right frightening looking. But, if I recall correctly, the ladies in that video made me an MTV fan!

Rog, as usual excellent job on the research and photos. What about The Iceberg Machine? What the heck is that?

J Geils...yup..lead singer Peter Wolf was a hideous site, how he even got the girls to do the videos was beyond me....but, like you IM GLAD HE DID....that cheesey 80s lingerie was HAWT...them strutting around the classroom made any kid stand at attention!!! They also had an earlier hit..LOVE STINKS....very catchy tune...funny video.

The Centerfold video reminds me of VanHalen's HOT FOR TEACHER video....remember? They casted kid look a likes for the band...and the teacher strips down to a string bikini...man, why werent teachers REALLY like that???? Id never have dropped out of school if the teachers were young and sexy and wore bikinis!!!
GET ON THE BUS...WALDO!!!

I'd never heard of the Iceberg Machine....but from the description on the Disney flyer...it sounds like an early attempt at New Age Techno....can you name ANY techno artists? I didnt think so...unfortunately, I know waaaay too many techno freaks...but still, Never heard of The Iceberg Machine. For some reason...Im picturing that afro haired kid from the show FAME, ya know...the one who carried his "synthesizer keyboard" around with him somehow managing to make it neccessary in every scene?:sad2:

Oh yeah! Hot for teacher was a great video. I sure miss the old MTV.

I am picturing the iceberg machine now. Definitely had to be a synthesizer, and I am also thinking lots of fog, and bad strobe light effects. And the guy with the Afro-I am sure his get up involved some Mork and Mindy suspenders.

ETA- I should have just googled Michael Iceberg-

Here he is in all his glory (and no afro or suspenders): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zxyD_R76wII

And the award for knowing the gender bender band goes to.......

Gatahdude!!!! Im surprised, Pete...had you pegged more for ZZ Top and Foreigner.

You are correct in your assumption, actually the Who and Thorogood. the only reason I know who that is, and believe me the only reason, is because I went to college with his cousin. They look exactly the same, except the singer Vito Bratta has long gay hair.

Ha ha ha! My ballet teacher at this time offered a class to the mom's of the ballerinas....believe it or not, they did their recital dance to this theme song and wore Greatest American Hero costumes! :rotfl2: Good Lord, I haven;t thought about that in YEARS! :lmao:

You're kidding, right?! How about Kraftwerk, the originators? Phish was doing techno back then as they are today. Or SoftCell, Human League, Men Without Hats, Erasure, Yello? Or Herbie Hancock, Harold Faltermeyer, Paul Hardcastle, New Order, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Corona or one of my personal favs, Shannon (Let the Music Play)! I know there is some genre bleed here, but all of these have clear Techno connections.

Now you're talkin' MY stuff. I'm back, back in the New York Groove. Kiss??? I can hear the song in my head.

At first I thought Aerosmith...but I don't thinks that's right. Kiss...yeah...that's it.

Deb, you're gonna love this, but Miss Megan has known that song since she was 3 yrs old! Pete has quite a diverse collection on his Ipod, and whenever we are somewhere and she hears music, chances are she knows the song. When we drive to the Fort we play name that tune with his Ipod.

Wow, lots of bands that I had forgotten about! I really liked New Order. They played a lot of this music in the clubs back in the day.
