I just wanted to report that I just got back from my first off-site trip. The ONLY reason we had to stay off-site is because my DH was attending a conference and 4 nights of the hotel (Hilton Bonnet Creek) was paid for. What I learned from this trip is how much I LOVE my DVC!

My main complaint is the transportation. For example, we went to DTD to see Cirque one night. The show was over at 7:40. We had just missed the bus which came at 7:20. The next bus didn't come until 9:40!!! Needless to say, we used Disney transportation to make our way over to Epcot where we caught the Hilton bus earlier than 9:40. Of course, then we had to stop at another park before heading to the hotel. Another morning, the bus picked up at 8:30 to go to DHS. Come to find out, it also had to stop at MK and Epcot before going to DHS. As you can probably guess, I missed rope drop and had a fairly long wait at TSM. I don't enjoy using the Disney bus transportation, but compared to these bus schedules, it's heaven! (Of course, we usually have a car and drive to DTD, but we flew this time, so no car.)

The other complaint I had was that every time I walked into the Hilton hotel, I felt like I couldn't be farther away from Disney. The Disney magic just evaporated! It looked like any hotel in any part of the country.

Don't get me wrong. I am grateful I was able to take this trip and that my accomodations were covered. But it just allowed me to see how much more grateful I am to have my DVC!!! Can't wait to June when I'll be at OKW and December when I'll be enjoying AKV! Love the Disney resorts!!!! :lovestruc

We love our DVC too! And if not using points, staying at value or moderate using cash. I know it's more expensive, but well worth it to us to stay on-site.

Awesome! A free trip is the only way I'd consider staying off property. People complain a lot about the buses but in comparison to the many hours in a day, I only find that I'm waiting a very minimal amount of time. I mean, sure, I'd like a people mover that begins right outside my hotel door and could zip me to my park of choice is less than 5 minutes. But until that's an option, I think Disney does a great job getting people around pretty smoothly compared to all the other options out there.

Thank you for reminding me!

We stay at OKW most of the time but we visit SSR, BC, BW, WL, GF, etc. because we love the themes of all Disney resorts. We love our DVC!!!

We pay big up front and have our monthly MF's, but I LOVE not having a bill at check out when using DVC!

I totally get what you're saying about "the magic evaporating". Very well put.
My dad traded out his week at Marriott Maui Ocean Club for Marriott Lakeshore Reserve next year. DH and I (and our 2 boys) will be joining my parents there for a week. I already told them I don't plan on doing Disney. We will use that week as an opportunity to do Seaworld, Universal, fishing excursions, and spa days. We're going to stay a few days extra at AKV to get my Disney fix!
I can't see the rational of staying off property and then doing Disney. I always end up feeling like I'm missing something! I can't explain it, but whenever I have stayed off site, and done Disney parks, I end up feeling a bit underwhelmed.
I just love the total immersion of the Disney resorts. They really have the power to transport you to another time and place. A feeling I have never gotten anywhere else.

Had the opportunity to do a trip to "Disney" last year for work. I put Disney in quotes because while the conference was at the Contemporary, my business unit was having us stay off site. Plus there was no accommodation to actually go to Disney. I declined the trip -- I couldn't see being that close without actually going.

Now we are going the end of April -- can't wait!
