DW may be transferred to one of these two cities. What can you tell me pro/con/misc? I've been to Louisville (very nice) but have never set foot in any part of Virginia. Any comments/thoughts? :)

Richmond

Pros - if you are a history buff, no better place to be. 2 hours to D.C., 2 hours to the mountains, 2 hours to the beach. 1 hour to Busch Gardens and Colonial Williamsburg. NASCAR. Atlanta Braves farm team. beautiful architechure(alot by Jefferson) . good economy. wonderful seasons.

cons- in downtown Richmond, one of the worst crime rates in the country.
avoid it. live in the burbs.

expect to pay about $300,000 to $325,000 for a 4 bedroom, 2,500 sq. foot house.

There are some places in the city that are very beautiful and safe, a good place for DINKs, but not many families there at all. Henrico is a great place to live (especially the Glen Allen area).

I do consider this to be somewhat of a racist down though. Still alot of arguments over the Civil War!

Louisville area here. I actually live in one of the surrounding counties. There are lots of nice areas to live, depending on your requirements. Do you have kids? Public schools are thought to be best in Oldham co. Private schools- there are several available, including many catholic. Less expensive housing is in the southern part of the county (jefferson) and more expensive in the east. Downtown is being revitalized, and they are doing a nice job, but it still isnt affordable for family type housing (very nice condos etc, but very expensive). Trendy areas are the Highlands and St Matthews area. There is a beautiful older area near Iroquois Park south of the city. (Southern Parkway area)

There are no pro sports, but a nice new baseball stadium for minor league baseball (louisville bats). College sports are popular, football and basketball.

Theater is good, broadway shows often come to the Ky Center for the Arts, there is also Actors theater. Museums downtown...brand new Ali museum, Derby museum, Speed Art Museum, Science Museum.

4th Street Live , newly refurbed downtown area with clubs restaraunts, etc.

Allergies are BAD here. The city sits in a valley and the air can get very stagnant, esp. in the summer. Traffic isnt TOO bad, unless you are commuting from indiana, then crossing the bridges can be bad.

I like it here, actually when my son graduates from high school, I will move back into the city itself (Southern Parkway area I hope)

Hope this helps. :hippie:

Thanks for the responses so far. Our children are grown, so schools are not a primary concern. We've been planning to move to Florida, but that doesn't seem to be happening. DW has a great job with a company with locations all over the U.S., but Richmond and Louisville are the two that want her right now. We'll probably be getting a 2 or 3 bedroom home as we don't require a lot of space.

Any other thoughts? :)

:wave2: I grew up in the suburbs of Richmond and loved it. I lived in Hanover county and my Dad still does. We try to visit whenever we can. Like someone else mentioned it's a great location for quick trips to Williamsburg, DC, the mountians or the beach. :thumbsup2 It's a beautiful city full of friendly people. But I guess I'm a little biased ;)
