Louisiana student has trouble with principal for wearing Colts jersey

My boss allowed casual football attire during the playoffs as long as it was Raven's wear, or colors. I was flat out told I was NOT to wear my Bengals jersey, the day before. I am not a school aged child, however.

I work at a school and on Fridays we can wear red shirts for spirit day or our uniform shirts. It was black and gold day and he chose not to wear black, gold, or his uniform top.

Black and Gold day means black and gold.

We have uniforms here and they are specific about what the kids wear at all times.

Sometimes the kids are allowed to wear wind suits on Fridays here this time of year as a treat for good grades . It is uniform or a windsuit ,that is it. If they show up in jeans parents get called to bring clothes.

It is a dress code, stick to it.

If we lived in Indy and it was Blue and White day , I wouldnt send my child in a Black and gold outfit.
Stick to the rules is what I say , and NOT because it is a Saints or Colts thing.

the title is a bit misleading because the school didn't send him home. The kids father told him to go home if he was being hassled.

If the school was having a dress down day of sorts, then any team jersey should have been okay. The kid was probably trying to stir things up a bit. I chalk it up to an idiot principal and a kid that wants his point heard. As long as they don't scream lawsuit, I say the kid is okay voicing his displeasure with the media.

That's crazy. What's even more crazy is that it's getting national attention.

The kid has every right to wear the jersey to school, he wanted to show support for his team, nothing wrong with that!

It was not a team spirit day, it was a Black and Gold day. I live in the area, all were told what colors to wear. He choose not to wear the colors, so he needed to be in uniform. It is very simple, he also would have been told to change had he shown up in a suit .

LOL but you are right, it is INSANE it is getting national attention!

Exactly! It wasn't a free dress day. The kid broke the dress code.

Our school rarely allows kids out of uniform, but they were allowed to wear Saints clothing on Friday. It was pretty clear you had the choice between uniforms or Saints gear. It wasn't support your favorite team day, and the kid knew beforehand that it wasn't allowed. He and his dad most likely were trying to start trouble. I guess they got the attention they wanted.

It's also being overlooked that he inquired about wearing the Colts jersey the day before & was denied, yet he wore it anyway.

Bored media looking for any story that adds to the hype.

Yes, it was not just ANY team support day. It was a SPECIFIC team.

As for the kid, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. He did it for attention in the same way the father had to call the ACLU and the media -- for ATTENTION. :mic:

Gah. The whole thing is silly. These people are taking a game played with a ball waaaaaay too seriously.

The principal really looks like a horse's behind after the Saints won. He had a "support my favorite team or wear your school uniform" day. What if he was a Colts fan? Think he would have allowed a "black and gold" day for the kids? No. This was all about him.

I would have been a little more imaginative than this kid at that age. I would have made a t-shirt up in black and gold supporting the Colts if I were him. Kick me out for that and we really have a law suit... :thumbsup2

Seriously, if I were a part of this school's management team, I would be embarrassed by this man's actions and his job would be in serious jeopardy...

THAT would have been the creative way to make a statement! Instead everyone (principal, student, and father) came off looking ridiculous.

exactly!!! IMHO, this is about abuse of power and not knowing when to pick your battles! I know some people will make this about the principal maintaining respect, but when you are this petty (not allowing kids to show support for the other team) and when you choose to push back so hard on something so minor (in contrast to the issues educators are faced with) - then you just come off as more juvenile than the kids you teach and end up losing their respect! Yeah, the principal has the power, but it up to him to use it wisely...this is abuse of that power and a lack of common sense as far as picking his battles.

Again, I am so glad I am from an area where this kind of nonsense isn't the norm!

Exactly. The relaxed dress code was a privilege, afforded to those who agreed to wear black and gold. Since it was SuperBowl weekend, we all know what those colors stood for - support for the Saints. Were they within their rights to do this? Yes. But it doesn't mean it reflects well on the school district or principal, though - especially in light of the ignorant comment he made to the student.

I can't believe this nonsense made National news.
I once wore a mock turtleneck under my uniform sweater instead of wearing my button down oxford and I was given detention. I wonder if I should have notified the press

I love the Dis, never fails to crack me up when people go straight to abuse of power and jobs should be in jeopardy.

There are rules, there are dress codes, , if you do not follow the rules you get in trouble. The rebellious teenager who wanted to stir the pot a bit , got in trouble. He knew exactly what would happen when he wore the shirt. Our schools are very strict and both father and son should not have been surprised.

Did you bother to read the article? It wasn't in support of his favorite team. It was a day to support the Saints. Surely you don't believe that he was the only principal to have black and gold/Saint's Day on Friday? Our school did it, and so did many others. One school used it as a fundraiser and raised quite a bit of money for Haiti.

So I guess if the principal had allowed students to break dress code and wear red for heart health, and this kid wore blue because he preferred that color, you'd be ok with that? Of course you would have never heard that story.

I do agree that the principal was out of line with his comment, but this kid (and his dad) sound like a behavior problem.

I don't believe the principal said it with much malice , prob was joking.

Silly teenager and dad looking for attention and haha, here we are giving it to them ; ).
