Just listening to Sweet Jane and realize how cool he is/was. Did anybody else like Lou Reed?

me! i love lou reed (and the vu too). :)

I wasn't around or was way too young Wild Side was new but I can't believe he got away with those lyrics back then.

Yeah, I was too young to appreciate them in their heyday, but he was a great songwriter. Slightly OT, but one of my favorite songs is Maureen Tucker(from the VU) doing After Hours.

I was at the "Rock 'n' Roll Animal" show that was turned into an album. I'm the one whoopin' and hollerin' at the "Intro/Sweet Jane" beginning. When he came out on stage, nobody knew who he was for a second. Gone was about 40 pounds...gone was the longish brown hair and there strutting in stage right was this skinny, blond hair short and spiky Lou Reed! What a "transformation"!

My friends and I must have gone to 200+ concerts in those days, from the beginnings at the Fillmore East to venues like the Bottom Line, Max's Kansas City, CBGBs, the Beacon, Academy of Music, Felt Forum, etc. Gone are those days. My son, 18, listens to Tool, Marilyn Manson, Sevendust, Deftones. It sounds like alot of noise to me. Concerts were an EVENT. People dressed up in their boas, veiled hats, velvet cloaks. I miss those days. And Lou played a big part in it. Thanks for helping me remember!

Rock on...Wilma

I also associate the Velvet Underground and Lou Reed with Andy Warhol.......

Wilma Flinstone, I love your trip down memory lane! Sounds way too fun! :)

I remember watching Lou Reed on Saturday Night Live. He was either drunk or high.. and was stumbling out the words to "I Love you Susanne"... he was actually booed!

Of course this was live, you won't find this rerun on Comedy Central.

That's the thing with Lou--either he's brilliant and off-the-cuff, or he's banal and way too bored/drunk/stoned!

I love him either way! He's originally from Freeport, Long Island, New York (I'm from a town not too far away). Many years ago, as a joke, my friends and I called his childhood home and SPOKE TO HIS MOTHER! Those were the good old days...Wilma:p

Wilma, reminds me of the times in high school me and my friends used to take rides to Asbury Park hoping to see Bruce. There were always reports of him coming into the pony for a drink or walking thru town. We never saw him though.

Funny you mentioned Bruce--he is one of my favorites also. I loved your story about hunting him down in Asbury Park. My old boyfriend (another Jerseyite) adored the yet unknown Bruce and took me to the Bottom Line in early 70's to see this unshaven warbler with cigs tucked into his rolled-up white undershirt. I fell in love right then and there. I really enjoy the stroll down memory lane. Thanks! Wilma from L.I. New York

Wilma, did you ever go to Tony Mart's with your then bf? I went there after it was in it's heyday but still cool.
Footage of it in Eddie and the Cruisers

No, in fact, I never heard of it. Tell me more...

My bf was from Montclair and we saw lots of shows in Passaic and Monmouth Arts Center. We never went farther south. Bruce was also at Westbury Music Fair in L.I. (a theater in the round and very intimate) as well as the Palladium in NYC. Then I got kind-of disinterested in Bruce. Of course now I adore him again. What goes around, comes around.

Now, at age 50, I have slowed down my pace considerably but still find time (and energy) to see people like Tom Petty, Sheryl Crow and Peter Gabriel. Rock still plays a big role in my life, but I only go to one or two concerts a year. How about you (and other posters)?? --Wilma

and the colored girls sing do doo do doo do doo do doo do..... I forgot about that song, I listen to Walk on the wild side 10 times a day for a year, I still have the 45
