I cant find the photo id part of my driving licence. Hardly ever need it. Got the paper part, but not the card. Turned the house upside down looking. Cant remember being asked for it at the rental desk in the past.(but may be indenial) When we were stopped once, cant remember whether the police man was interested in it. Any ideas? If its bad news, I think I'll have a nervous breakdown. As will dw, who doesn't like driving in the US. Oh yes, we go tomorrow!!!!

Ian - when we went in December Dollar only looked at the paper part, did not ask for the card at all.

Is this the answer you wanted? :teeth:

Have a great trip!!

Thanks Miffy, but still a bit worried. I'm usually very well planned, but this was unexpected! Still, you've reassured me a bit :)

i unfortunatly did it the other way, i lost the green part, they wouldnt let me drive on the photocard, they said they only needed the green part (turns out it was in the bottom of hand luggage anyway)

you will be fine as people still just have green ones and no photocards

My DH and I do not have a photo drivers licence, we still have one of the old style paper ones and have never had problems renting a car in America. Like others have said I am sure you will be fine with the paper one.

I appreciate the reassurance, the only reason I'm still worried is because on new green licences (with photo id) it does say that both sections may need to be produced. Still, think it'll be ok. I hope!

With Dollar at Sanford I have never been asked for my paper license. I always just show my photo license.

That's funny. I've only ever been asked for the paper license!!! I gave them the photo ID and they (Dollar) said no need for that.

Is that all those people who have never read the part about needing both parts of the licence to drive anywhere abroad. i also find the photo part to be useful ID instead of lugging my passport with me all the time.

That's fine, if you've got it handy! I usually do the same.

I do actually know I need both parts, I do read the details, plus I was only additional driver not the main one,

plus I have been over there 18 times and know it without being told

I have to say that even though I take both parts, I have only ever been asked for the photo card.
You have to take the paper one of course as it has your convictions on it.
Have you thought about getting an International Drivers permit as a back up from the AA?

Ive never heard of one of these, perhaps you could tell us more about them, but I find it difficult to believe that anyone would accept something not issued officially by the state.

Thats an odd one Andy !

That happened to me also in LAX - only wanted photo card, not paper part. I had both anyhow, so not as odd as you may think! I guess that was Dollar also, as it was a Virgin package holiday, but can't remember exactly.

Just came back from the US. We picked up a car at Dollar in LAX, and the agents reaction to being given the paper part as well as the photo part was 'Whats that? We don't need no paper bit!' So, its the photo card you'll need, and the paper bit if they are being picky about something.

The paper part of the new driving licence is NOT valid as a driving licence as it only shows endorsements and provisional licence for other types of vehciles, not the permission to drive a car. We have only ever been asked for our photocard. If you are involved in any road incident the paper part only, excluding old style paper licences is not accepted as a driving licence.
Hope you managed to resolve this before departure.
Claire ;)

Just back. Just for everyones info, didn't need photo part of driving licence at the Dollar desk, but still pretty sure you should have it for legal reasons whilst driving around. As it turned out, found my photo part in a pair of shorts I'd not worn for a while, 2 days into the holiday, it had even survived intact after being washed!
Just as well, as it turns out. Was asked for photo ID many times when using credit cards or my annual pass for discounts!
