LOST SEASON 3 **Official** Discussion/Speculation Thread (No Spoilers)

I enjoyed the episode, but at this point in the series I really do feel *lost* because I can't remember all the intricate details of past storylines.

Question about last night, though: during the book club opening scene, why did the ground start shaking? Whatever caused it must have also caused the plane to crash, and the others obviously knew it would happen because they immediately went outside and started looking in the sky.

At first I thought it was the plane crash that caused the shaking, but that couldn't be possible!
The ground shaking and the plane crashing were caused by Desmond. If I remember correctly, he decided at this moment to not push the button which was what made the plane crash (I hope I'm remembering that correctly, if not, could someone jump in here?)

I remember him figuring out the time and date and the moment he did not push the button and connecting it to the plane crash.

Yes, it looks like Desmond was the one who caused the plane to crash by not pushing the button, that is also why the ground was shaking.

I'm wondering if the others are there willingly. If Ben was truthful to Michael about which compass direction to take, then it would seem they could get off the island, but I wonder if they can. :confused3

It's not that he decided not to push the button but he was out either killing or burying Kelvin and realized he was late pushing the button. He raced back and entered the numbers but it was too late for flight 815.

If they can't leave, then someone is supplying them with food, CDs, books, etc.
When they were taking Kate to the beach to meet with Ben, they walked her under a canopy that reminded me of a hotel. Anyone else notice that? And Kate looked confused looking up at it-- like where on earth could THAT have come from?

The books and cd's that I have seen so far are not current. I mean, that the Stephen King book was published in 1974. CD's have been available since the 80's. So, someone doesn't necessarily have to supply those to them. The food is a different matter though.

Ok someone needs to help me shed some light here (I'll have to watch it again on ABC.COM later). In the beginning, Juliet puts on that "Downtown" CD and looks upset. Like she had just gone through a break-up. Then at the book club, that guy goes off on how horrible that book is and something about "no wonder its a bad book because the head of the house didn't choose it" or something like that and mentions the name Ben and Juliet takes offense. Outside after the "earthquake," and Ben outside says "guess I'm not in your book club now." Is that due to the fact that they broke-up or due to the "earthquake?"

Cut to the end when Juliet calls Henry, Ben, as she walks out. Do you think they could have been married at some point and recently broke it off before the plane crashed? Maybe that is why she is so sympathetic with Jack?? :confused3

Good catch if you are right about them previously being a couple. I want to know why Ben said something along the lines of "good job" in the final scene, after she told Jack that Sarah was happy. Do you think she maybe isn't happy, perhaps it was a lie to get him to open up to her?

I think it's pretty clear they were pointing to them having a previous relationship. I also think that the "good job" was about her getting inside his head just like he got inside Locke's head when he was tied up inside the hatch.

Looks like this episode was about setting up the new characters and answering the questions that needed to be answered to move on.

Did Desmond cause the crash, yes.
Did they know about the crash before hand, no.
We now know why Ethan and Goodwin were in the camps.
Do the Others have access to the outside world, yes.

IMO the biggest thing still to come is what is their current feelings about Dharma. Are they still working with them or are they or they what's left of a group that decided to go against their wishes.

ok. this show officially sucks. It just too catoony now. From the preview, i'm not expecting much next week. Ugh, just the same never ending storyline.

Glad to see I am not the only one who feels this way. I just don't care about the characters anymore. Last night just made Jack look like a jerk. I have never liked Sawyer and don't really care who Kate picks.

Everytime you think you know something they change it. I have often wondered why they didn't search the island. And way would the Others not help the plane crash victims? They saw the crash so they know they weren't landing there on purpose.

I have reached the point of trying to decide if I want to watch anymore.

What did they do to her she is so tough and has never looked defeated! What are they going to do to her for the next two weeks Who is the crazy kid in the cell that helped sawyer escape! was he on the plane too?? Or just an other who was in trouble

Thanks! I do remember that happening now.

So hard to keep up!

I don't think it's that he decided not to push the button. I think it's because he didn't get back to the hatch in time. Remember he had followed that other guy outside and saw that the guy took off the mask? Then saw his sailboat in the harbor. There was a struggle and the "mask guy" got his head cracked on the rocks. Then Desmond went back to the hatch to hear "system failure" and weird things happening.

Later he came to the realization (after looking at the printouts) that he caused the plane to crash.

I can't seem to shake the whole Kate thing. The first impression I got was that she was violated in some way but I don't know if they would write that into the show. It was cute to see Sawyer react that way to Kate. I used to be a Jack and Kate fan but I'm getting tired of Jack and all of his drama. I'm in the Kate and Sawyer club now. Can't wait for next week!

I think part of that is that they have a lot to do just to survive. I think the island is bigger than we realize and there are dangers out there (what's with the big stomping thing and the black smoke thing?) Seems to me they went "exploring" when they HAD to for some reason (get Claire's baby back, try to find Michael, etc) but they didn't have a lot of extra time or resources to explore, KWIM?

I thought that too. The whole "shower and put on this skimpy dress thing." And then when they put her in that cell it looks like she had been through something very traumatic (although not physical b/c she lacked bruises, etc)

Right. And remember the first night on the island, there was that loud metallic/monstrous roar and trees were pushed aside. As if there was a very large animal/monster out in the jungle. That would surely keep me from exploring too far away from the beach.

ETA: They also had hopes of being rescued. They didn't even want to leave the beach for the security of the caves, for fear that any rescue party wouldn't see them if they left. There minds were in survival mode, not exploration mode.

I'm wondering if the dress Kate was wearing has any significance like maybe that dress is actually hers. I thought she looked at little shocked when she first saw the dress, but I may be reading too much into this. :)
