Had to post this somewhere anonymously, since I can't post on FB. My principal called me in to say that our faculty of 140 is only losing one job next year--mine. I have been teaching for 20 years, have a Master's plus 30, and love my job. I moved to my new position 3 years ago, after 17 years in another district, to be closer to home and work in my childrens' district, since DS has disabilities and I got a job at what will be his high school. Another teacher lost his position, and is bumping me. I am reeling, and looking for sympathy. I haven't been out of work since I was 12! Budget questions will come later, but for today, just feeling sorry for myself. Thanks for letting me grieve. Now back to grading research papers...

Is it possible to apply again at your old district? Here in Fl many teachers have been and still will be loosing their jobs due to budget cuts. I know my school (Lee County Fl) will be loosing 5 teachers this year.:sad2:

I am so sorry to hear this. To have that much experience and lose it.. is well so sad.

Unfortunately, there will be many that are just like you.. my district in NJ is losing 104-106 positions. Funding was slashed so much it is a very scary prospect. There are going to be so many out of work teachers in NJ it will just be such a drain on the already high unemployment figures.

I graduated in 2008 with a teaching degree and couldn't find a permanent teaching position and am now working with the government. The federal government does hire many former teachers (there were 3 in my training class!) so that is always an option.

If what the paper says is true, our district will lose 90 teachers. Schools are going to lose some very good teachers and I'm afraid that the effects of this will be very negative on the students! I am very sorry you have lost your job :(

You have my deepest sympathies and prayers, and anything else you need. I've had a bunch of friends go through this- through RIFs at the city level, through layoffs at corporate levels... Nothing can prepare you for it, just keep in mind that it's nothing that YOU'VE done, it's a business decision, and don't take it personally.

And start looking ASAP. I know you don't feel like it, but it's better than sitting around doing nothing.... Positive action...

My former district is in pretty bad shape too, so I don't think so, but I may try if need be. Thanks.

Same type of situation here. My school closed 2 years ago and I was let go along with 80 others. I am now a TA at a high school and love it BUT...making $10 and hour........Make sure you keep your resume current. Someone may take a "Buy out" or retire or take an extended maternity leave. Sometimes in Aug teachers shuffle and go to other districts. Keep your chin up.....it might just turn up ok. Can you ask if perhaps they can hire you as a school per sub? Ours gets 75% pay guar. and benefits.....They are also the first hires when a position pops up.....let us know.

I am so sorry! :grouphug: Best of Luck!
I know that a dedicated teacher like you will still keep plugging away for those kids despite the turn of events. I wish for you....that your NEXT job is even BETTER than this one!!! :wizard:

I am sorry that happened to you. I too hope your next job is a better one!

So sorry for the pain you are experiencing. I know it doesn't help much, but there are many in the same situation. I work as an educational assistant at our school district and we are looking at cuts as well. My personal outlook on situations like this is that God has something even better planned for you! It may not seem like it now, but just the right situation for you and your family will come along. Stay positive!

Not trying to impose my faith on you, but my favorite scripture says that all things work together for the good to those that love God. You just gotta believe that this too is for a reason --that this will be for the best even though it doesn't appear that way now.

I am SO SO SORRY!

Are you being bumped because you are union and have the least amount of seniority? I know I am making assumptions here but my husband works for a University and this is the way that the unions do it. He is not union but has voiced frustration because some really amazing employees get bumped so that individuals that have senority keep their jobs. I HATE that! Yes, I agree it should be a factor but job performance should have impact too!

Stand strong sister. It really will work out.

Maybe someone will decide to retire. Retirements are one of the best means for making cuts. You don't have to let anyone go. I teach at a private school and our enrollment is booming due to the cuts and problems in the public school systems. Usually we are worried about staying open because of enrollment, but for a change, we are in great shape. Best wishes to you!

I agree with minnie's post--remember when a door closes, a window opens!
