another question - someone in our group said we could make 60 day fast passes with military salute tickets even though we're not staying on property - is that correct?? Doesn’t seem legit but I’m not military so??

I don't think this is correct. It's the hotel reservation that opens the 60-day window, not the ticket type. But easy enough to check - if you already have the tickets try to make FP 60 days from today.

so if my nephew (in the military) bought our tickets but he isn't arriving until later in the day -- we can't go to the parks until he is with us??

Where did your nephew buy the tickets? If he bought them on a base, yes, you have to activate them and he has to be present the first time you use them.

If he ordered them from Shades of Green, you can skip the activation step (they send activated tickets) and he does NOT have to be with you to enter on the first day.
