Lost Mail: What to do?

I have a problem with mail that I am assuming was somehow lost in the system! It was a check that was mailed to me on June 1st and still hasn't arrived. I know the woman who was mailing me the check so I know this isn't a situation where someone just told me they sent it and really didn't. It was coming from the New Orleans area, so that might be part of the problem. I am just wondering if anyone has any experience with this. I mean should I just keep patiently waiting even though it was mailed on the 1st or was it probably lost? Is there anything I can do to check where it is? It was for a substantial amount of money so I am really worried if it did get lost! Thanks for any insight!

I'm not sure how long you feel comfortable waiting for it to come in the mail, but if I were concerned I would ask the person who issued the check to place a stop on it and mail a new one. The stop could cost them money, so that's a risk they would have to take in deciding to do that or just issue a new one.

I don't need the check immediately, but I have never had anything happen like this before...generally I get mail in 3-5 business days. I just don't know what's normal, I mean does it sometimes take a few weeks? I don't know if I should assume it's lost and get her to mail me a new one or keep waiting.

What could have happened was an incomplete, incorrect, or unreadable address on the envelope. As long as she had a return address on it, it will be returned to her. It can take quite a while for that process though. I would say 2-3 weeks would not be unreasonable.

As well as the myriad things that can be wrong with a letter or happen to a letter, it may just be that things are still very backed up down there. They've only gotten the NO area post office back up and running recently. And, I don't really know or haven't heard how backed up Baton Rouge still may be. If you don't get it within another week, I would definitely try to have her put a stop on the check, though. Hope it shows up soon.
