I went thru the search but most of it had to do with stolen luggage, not lost luggage. We never bring anything of value but I just wonder, has DCL ever lost luggage when YOU yourself bring it to the terminal (not transferred from some transportation service after a flight or anything)?

I'm a bit concerned because I wouldn't be able to buy anything to fit me on the cruise so if my luggage is lost, I'm SOOL. I'm thinking of mixing clothes up between all our luggages just in case ONE went missing (my luck, it would be mine!) But also, if your luggage has been lost when starting off on a cruise, has it been found in time to enjoy your cruise?

On our first cruise one of our suitcases was delivered to the wrong stateroom. Of course it was the one that had all of our shoes in it. As I was getting ready for dinner (and preparing myself to wearpink Crocs with a dress) the people who had inadvertantly received our luggage delivered it to our cabin. From now on I will divide our luggage a little differently.

...and that's what I was worried about. Do they give you tags at the terminal to write down your room number or anything? I can't remember...it's been 4 years since our last cruise. BTW, I'm sure your pink Crocs would have rocked the dress anyway! ;)

Before your cruise they'll send two luggage tags per passenger to put on your suitcase. they have your name and stateroom number on them. Be sure to put them on before you arrive at the terminal. If you arrive day of cruise you may be able to put them on your luggage before you leave home and the porters from the cruise transfers will pick them up. i'm not sure about the last part. anyway. pink crocs would have definitely rocked that dress!

Not on DCL.

But on my first cruise out of Miami, a member of our party handed her bag to the cruise line folks (Paquet cruise line) when she checked in at the port. It never arrived in her room. The Purser said it must have been delivered to the wrong room. Come the next day, when nobody had reported that they had luggage in their room that wasn't theirs, he called Miami. No luggage had been left behind.
Did I mention this was a 2 week Caribbean cruise? They did give her $250 credit in the on board clothing store (this was in 1980) and free dry cleaning, but she was without her clothing for 2 weeks.
Sooooooooooo, we get back to Miami 2 weeks later, and the suitcase is waiting for her. The same cruise line had another ship that sailed on the same day from the same terminal on one week long cruises. It sat on that ship unclaimed for a week....nobody on board bothered to investigate further....and it was taken to the lost and found on that ship on board where it sat for a SECOND week (yep, my co-worker got a 2 week cruise on one ship, her suit case got two 1 week cruises on another ship) until someone on the final day decided it should be taken back to the pier to see who it belonged too. Only then did the cruise line put two and two together.

I have never heard or read of anyone not getting their luggage on the ship once it was physically handed over to Disney--whether at MCO (at the Welcome Center) or to the porters at the terminal. ALL of the issues I've had or read of have been when DCL couldn't get a bag from an airline (as in it didn't arrive or someone else took it.)

I have read reports of people receiving damaged luggage thanks to fellow guests who can't follow the rules about not placing beverages in checked bags.

I have no experience to add to lost/misplaced luggage but I do mix up our clothes when I pack. And, that is tricky as well as I try to pack a few days worth of outfits in each bag, jammies, unmentionables etc. just in case. But, if you are handing luggage over at the port, I wouldn't worry - at least it would be on the ship.

My DH and I went on a 2 wk cruise in the mediterranean (started in Venice) (not on DCL) with my mom, sister, and two friends. My DH and I got our luggage but my mom, sister and two friends never received theirs at the Venice airport and so basically the entire trip the bags were trying to catch up with us...just always one port behind us (at least that is what we were told). Our fifth stop was Mykonos and the cruise confirmed that all 6 missing bags were there...unfortunately we weren't able to dock that day in Mykonos because it was too windy, so no Mykonos and no bags. My mom and sister got their bags the second to last night (so basically got to enjoy having their cloths and make up and stuff for one day) and the two friends go theirs delivered when they got home to Houston. THey were given money to buy things and free use of the washing facilities, but still what a hassle. To spend so much money on a cruise and not get to have all the great things you bought to wear. Basically, after that experience I always pack at least a few outfits in my carry on (with underwear and stuff) and have my hair straightener..the things I can't go without...just in case.

^^^ It's always a good idea to pack outfits, including shoes, for each member of the family in every suitcase. It can be burdensome to pack that way, but it's well worth it in case of an emergency. That way, in case one piece of luggage goes missing (or is delayed for some reason), everyone has something to wear while on vacation. That's what I do when I pack for the family. On the way back home, I don't mind packing all the shoes in a duffle bag for instance, but I wouldn't do that on the way to our destination because one never knows. Hope that helps answer your question. Have a great time on DCL! :goodvibes

On our May cruise, one of our bags was delivered to the wrong room. It was my DD's bag. It had the DCL supplied tag on it. Our (mine/DH) luggage was delivered fairly quickly after the stateroom was ready. An hour later hers still wasn't there, an hour more and still not there. I happened to be walking back to the room a little later and saw her bag laying in the middle of the hallway on the opposite side of where our rooms were. We were in 5020 and her bag was laying in the hall in front of 5520. Evidently whoever got it in error didn't think to walk around the front of the elevators and drop it at the correct room. Good thing I spied it, as all of her clothing and most of DGS clothing for the trip was in that bag. Quite frankly, if I received a wrongly delivered bag, I would just take it to the correct room myself, or at least give it to the stateroom attendant, not just throw it into the middle of the hallway.

Three years ago, we disembarked kind of late and our huge, heavy green duffel bag was not in the baggage claim area at the port.
We filed a claim (it had all our formal wear, snorkel gear, etc.) We went to WDW for the three days afterwards. No one called us the first day or two, but by the third day we got a call from DCL that another passenger had picked up our bag by mistake and drove it all the way back to North Carolina before they realized it wasn't theirs and called to report the mixup. DCL sent a FedEx truck to pick up the duffel, and it was delivered to our home, intact, with nothing missing, a couple days later. While it could have been pretty disastrous if we never saw the bag again, we joke that it actually turned out good for us since the bag was filled with all stuff from the cruise we didn't need at WDW (including laundry) and it spared us from having to haul it around the airport flying home!

Seconding the mixing up clothing.

My strategy is to put special outfits together as a whole - so all my pirate gear and all DH pirate gear go in the same case, both my and DH formal gear goes in another. That way we both dress up fully or neither of us do. I also put semiformal in a different bag to formal - that way you can adapt one outfit to the other night if necessary.

And after the special outfits i split everything as equal as possible, 1 pair shorts per person in each bag, 3 tshirts per person per bag, etc.

The only thing i can't split is the toilet bag but i always figure its cheap and easy to buy replacement toothbrushes/toothpaste etc.

I would probably do as you mentioned- and deliver it myself to the passenger as a common courtesy but do you think it's possible that maybe they were told to leave it in the hall and an attendant would come by to collect it?

If you want to have a good cruise. QUIT WORRING ABOUT IT. What else are you going to worry about driving everyone else crazy!!!

We ran into the opposite problem. There was a bag missing when we departed the ship. What they speculated happened was somebody picked it up thinking it was theirs, realized it after moving it, but never put it back. My better half had placed these big red ribbons on our bags and that really helped when on the search for the lost one. It only slightly delayed our departure from the terminal. Otherwise, have never had a lost bag.

Never thought of placing a few items in other bags just in case something gets lost. May have to try that in the future.

Edit to post: Actually, I just remembered, we did have one bag go missing on the Freedom for a short period after we boarded. The tag had become separated from the bag and a quick visit down to the lost baggage section they had set up quickly resolved the situation. I seem to remember there were probably 20 to 30 bags down there, all with no tags, and no other way to identify them. It was a bag that folds in half, and I had looped the tag around both handles, so when somebody probably picked it up by one handle, it ripped the tag off. Lesson learned. For any future trips, we will have our info inside the bag in an obvious place as well.

I wonder how many times you've had your luggage lost, and had to make due without. It's a valid worry, and people are discussing ways to deal with it. I don't think your comment was particularly helpful.

I know this is slightly off topic, but related. It seems that on the three cruises we have been on, the subject was never concerning lost or misplaced luggage, but had to do with what people pack in the luggage they leave in the hall the night before. That somebody will pack everything, including something to wear off the ship the next day, in the luggage they set in the hallway, that they will not see until they get to customs! Stories of bedsheets and bare feet on departure day dominate every time I have seen a cruise director discuss the subject. I have yet to experience it first hand. Everybody I saw departing seemed to be wearing something they intended to.

We've had luggage delays from airlines but eventually got our bags before sailing. Another reason to fly down a day earlier!
I've never had a cruise line lose a bag. I did have my garment bag damaged a few cruises back. A side zippered compartment had its zipper torn off and it was hanging open like a big flap. I let it go figuring 'Sh** Happens'. My dad happened to mention to guest services and they picked it up and sent it to be repaired. They didn't put a whole new zipper on it but did reconnect it and put a stopper over the torn off teeth. At least now I can unzip it 3/4 open and it's still a usable side pocket.

Also I ALWAYS pack my bathing suits in carry on (plane). Dh and boys can easily buy swim trunks anywhere and they all fit the same and are so inexpensive. Ladies swimsuits? That's another story. I'd rather have root canal than have to go shop for a new swimsuit while on vacation. :guilty:
Any other items lost I can make do without. :goodvibes
