I just got back from a recent cruise. The airline lost my luggage on the way down to the cruise. Luckily I was there a day early and had the ability to power shop before getting on the boat. My bag (containing my entire summer wardrobe I might add) has never turned up and they are asking me to submit a claim. Anyone have any advice at all before I turn my claim over the airline? I have it ready to go but was wondering if there was any advice from someone out there who may have experienced this. Thanks in advance....

Luckily you had a spare set of clothes to wear and the extra day. There's still lots of people who don't think about that and end up wearing the same clothes for a second day or so.

As for a claim, be specific as much as possible. I'm not going to tell you to pad the list, as that's not right, but try to be complete. For pricing, try to get prices from local stores or direct from MFR vs on-line. Don't forget the cost of the luggage piece as well.

Of course, your Prada purse and Jimmy Choos were in that bag, right? ;)

You can always take a trips to Scotsboro, Alabama and find your luggage. As that is where all lost luggage ends up.

Nothing, that can help you now. But in the future always take pictures of your luggage and it's contents. That way you have something to show the claims people.

Great idea!!!! On our Land/Sea in Oct '05 My largest bag was gone the first two days of our trip (all of mine and our 4dd's clothes....) Disney paid for clothes for the two of us --- it turned out they sent that suitcase on the cruise ahead of us! :rotfl:

I recently had the misfortune of this happening to me also over the march break. I got my suitcase back yesterday as a matter of fact. The handle on top of the suitcase broke off and that is where our name tag and flight info was placed. So now before leaving to go anywhere, I make a list of all the items that are in the suitcase and also as someone else mentioned, take a picture of what you have inside. Also write down the brand of your suitcase somewhere (I didn't and that's why it took them so long to send me my suitcase because they didn't think it was mine.) Hope you get your suitcase back like I did, goodluck to you.

I've had this happen before and now make adhesive labels with all our info on the labels and paste them on the bags somewhere else that's visible. Hotel info and cruise line and airline flight number plus my name. No address info on them.

Best advice I have heard, when you and your luggage are about to be separated, use your phone to take a picture (if you have that ability) and then you have an exact description of the bag to share in case it is lost

Hope the bag turns up but after learning about the Alabama warehouse, it seems pretty depressing!

Good luck with your claim

Oh, remember there is a $ maximum which kind of eliminates surftrish's cute jest....

If your homeowner's policy deductible isnt too high, you could always make a claim on your policy. You'd have to have a good bit of things missing to get over the deductible though. I believe they won't let you double dip either -- whatever the airline or other insurances pay will be deducted before they pay your claim.

Another thing to add, most luggage has some kind of pocket on the outside where you can put contact info as well - we stick a buisness card from work in there as a backup.

Thanks everyone!! I seriously doubt at this point in time the luggage will ever appear. Great idea to put additional information INSIDE the bag. I did check my homeowners which sounds like a real pain....they depreciate and once you buy the item back you provide a receipt to get the additional funds. With a bunch of clothes.....not a fun task. Lesson learned....don't pack EVERYTHING you own. For whatever reason...I needed options!

What's an A4 sheet?

Thanks for the baggage ID. I just used it as a model to make up one for our family. I have to admit I have gotten lazy on putting that info in my bag. If I can just print it out each time, I know I will do it.

Approximatly what we in the USA call "letter size" 8 1/2 x 11.

If you us MS Word, you can go to the Tools Menu, select Options, click on the Print Tab and you will see lots of different options - one of which is "Allow A4/Letter paper resizing". That's how/what I based my answer on.

Yes - here in the UK we size our paper A1-A10

A4 is the 'normal' letter size.

Since the condo where we stay has a washer/dryer, I'm seriously considering only bringing a carryon this trip. My cosmetics fit fine in a ziploc bag, but I know I'll need a gallon of sunblock (Ok, I exaggerate, but a heck of a lot more than 3 oz.). Thoughts? I'm petrified of losing my luggage. I'm a fairly novice flyer and might be considered a tiny bit paranoid. :)

Recognizing, of course, that the airline is not liable for losses in excess of $3,000 unless you have purchased coverage for the additional value.
