I am looking at booking a car but keep seeing this LWD as very important. I will be booking either with my RBC reward points or using my RBC Visa which has insurance for the car as well as my own car insurance. If it is worth it to get okay but if not??? We will be renting a mini van for 2 days and then only for part of a day at the end.
The last time I rented a car from Miami they wouldn't let me have the car until I bought this and the price was just horrible.

The best thing to do is to call your own insurance agent and find out what kind of coverage you have for rentals and whether you would need that. We never purchase it because we have sufficient other coverage. Your credit card may also give you some protection. Since you are out of the country, this seems to be the best approach (well it's the best for anyone, but I know nothing about Canadian insurance).

AFAIK, they cannot force you to purchase it to rent the car, but they can exert a lot of pressure on you to buy it. It is a commission item for the rental agents. Again, it is possible that non-US renters have different requirements.

I am glad that they can't force you to buy it but the last time the agent said that he could not rent me the car until I had bought the insurance. That Florida State law said that they could not rent it without it. I was really pissed and kept saying that I didn't want it or need it and that I had already paid for my rental. I was told that I could go else where for a rental but would lose the money I had already spent and that the other place would tell me the same thing. I figured I was being lied to but since I am from Canada I had no idea if that really was the law. It didn't matter anyway because he was not going to rent me the car without it. He was the only one at the counter and we didn't see any other nearby car rental places.

Tigercat...you were LIED to. You do not have to pay for the car rental companies insurance. You said yourself that your personal insurance covered rental vehicles and that your credit card provided secondary insurance.

You should have called the police. Miami is the closest thing to a third world country in the US.

What car rental company was this?

It was 2 1/2 yrs ago so I don't remember the company. Just have been glad that we haven't gone back to Miami.
Our last cruise we just used the transfers from the ship and taxis. This time though we are going to go to Disney for a day before hand so renting a car was the best thing to do.
Thank you very much for the Florida law. When you are not from that country and you don't know the law sometimes you are stuck. Especially since you have already paid and thought that you had already done everything.

Your should be equally concerned about the 3rd party liability which your credit card doesn't cover. This is a thread from the Canadian boards about car rental insurance. http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2951534
I think it was Budget a couple of years ago that added insurance to my son's rental without even asking. He looked over the paperwork before signing and noticed the difference in the price and had them remove it, he wasn't very happy with them.
