Losing weight is costing me money

I spent $215.00 on groceries for one week for a family of 4. I bought all healthy food too - veggies, fruit, chicken - ughhh.

Then I paid for a one hour training fee at the YMCA- only $30 though. I wish I was skinny!

I have managed to shop healthfully and keep my grocery bill about the same, but the thing that has cost me money is having to buy new clothes! I like to hsop and everything, but when I have to replace all my pants every 2 months, it gets to be a bit much.

i have to admit...eating healthy IS expensive (I paid $3.35 for TWO green peppers last week!) Fresh veggies/leaner meats/etc...it adds up!

we don't have a "wholesale" club membership...but I try to stock up on meats/chicken when it's on sale at our grocery store.

Funny - 2 green peppers (approx 2 servings) cost me 3.35...and a box of pop tarts (12 pastries in the box) was on sale for $2.

go figure

Processed and pre-packaged foods are way cheaper than buying fresh. Such a shame. I made a real commitment to start eating more healthy food over the summer, and it's hit my wallet pretty hard!

Lean meats and fresh fruits and veggies and whole grains.... they add up quickly!

Yes, it may cost more in the short run. But in the long run when you are in better health, it will save you money.

I do Weight Watchers and lost 26 pounds and I know the healthier food costs more than the junk.

Just wait until you have to replace 90% of your clothes! That's what hit me in the butt! And I had to, I have to dress nice for work and baggy clothes just don't cut it here.

i'm in the same boat. it got really embarassing when my boss kept telling me it was time to buy new clothes. i felt like saying: "i will when you increase my salary." :rotfl:

I hear you on the clothes. I bought two pairs of jeans in November annd they are already baggy. I'm not buying anything until I reach my goal - 20 pounds.

Wow, I wish my problem was having to buy smaller clothes! I keep having to buy bigger, but that's why I'm also spending more on healthy food and working my butt out on my new elliptical machine. I can't wait to have to spend all my money on new, SMALLER clothes!!!

I have gained A LOT of weight in the past 3 years and I refuse to buy new bigger clothes. I am practically without anything that fits, but I WILL lose this weight and I WILL be a size 4 again (alright, I'll settle for a size 6). So I am saving myself a whole lot of money-haven't bought anything new in 3 years. :rotfl2:

Wow thank goodness we have an aldis here. I spend around that for a whole months worth of groceries, but we do get a lot of our own meat for free or very very cheap.

Punkin I am the same way, I hate to buy new clothes, just recently I bought some jeans but thats about it for the last 5 years....I hate to admit but I still wear my old maternity clothes ( hey they are comfy! ) and my youngest will be 6 in April :rotfl2:

Wow - on average I spend $150 a week and I clip coupons. Living near big cities is expensive.

I'm waiting for Sam's Club to be finished building - maybe that will help. Today was my biggest bill ever.

I emailed DH at work so I didn't have to listen to it when he got home. He emailed back saying he just gave birth to a 48 pound baby cow. Maybe he'll want me to stay chubby :)

The CDC estimates that people of normal weight spend $900/year less on healthcare costs than people who are obese so that should cushion some of those food costs.

Work on cooking more seasonally. Subscribe to a mag like Vegetarian Times. They are great at giving recipes by the season to help make use of what is cheapest at various times of year.

When I started eating healthier my grocery bill was huge too. But once I got the hang of eating right and got some good meal ideas my bill went back to normal :)

Oh my goodness. I was going to post about this earlier!!! I tried the multi grain pasta for the first time and LOVED it. I wanted to test it before introducing it to the fam. Now I will buy it for all but it is sooo much more expensive then reg. pasta. And why do things with LESS fat and LESS sugar cost MORE??? :confused3

I hear you and COMPLETELY agree that it's SEEMS to "cost" more to eat right! I too am a WW Success story, having lost a little bit over 100 pounds 17 years ago...but I must say that the SAVINGS (aside from the "priceless" gift of a healthier...better quality life) is evident in the fact that in 17 years, the only time I've had to buy new clothes is when I WANT to - vs. with every "Size" I grew into on the way UP I had to keep buying a whole new wardrobe (once the elastic wouldn't work with me any longer)!!!

Also..quite honestly....I never CARED about the rising price of a CANNOLI in those days!!! LOL! :rotfl:

Eating healthy definitely costs more, but I have found if I buy the fruits and veggies that are "in season" it's definitely less.

If you get the Saving Dinner book or menu-mailer by Leanne Ely, it's great for helping with the budget. Everything is by season and it's all very healthy, unprocessed foods. Check out the website savingdinner.com.
