Los Angeles just hit by earthquake

Wow... whats even scarier is when you realize that you are getting all your world news on disboards.com

Anyways... Hope all is well with you disboarders that live near there!

5.8 is a pretty good size one. Hopefully, everybody is okay. I lived there during the Northridge and Landers/Big Bear.

I know a lot of folks don't pay attention to earthquake safety when they plan DL vacations. However, I do think that the GCH is a much better design for quakes (all of those nice arts and crafts beaming are really painted on steel beams that are reinforced and seem much more for quake safety) than the DLH.

I can never get used to quakes and I have lived here all my life. They make me so nervous. I think the Northridge quake really just sent me over the edge, but I definitely remember the Landers/Big Bear quakes too. Those were big! I get so scared during quakes because I am afraid they are going to get bigger and my darn building wouldn't stop shaking. I have to calm down now and wait for the news to tell me what fault it was on. San Andreas is the least of our worries now. There are so many unknown faults underground (like the Northridge one) we could get hit from anywhere and not know it!

i was just about to post something i heard on the news that cell phones were having trouble or something. also (big Brother house felt it) im watching it live and they just mintioned it I didnt see it lol i was watching tv but now there talkign about it. (lol idont know if any one here knows what bigbrother is its on cbs, sorry for off topic just found it funny)
I do hope every one who felt it is fine

hahaha Apparently I'm late for the party. I was going to post : A moderate earthquake occurred at 11:42:15 AM (PDT) on Tuesday, July 29, 2008.
The magnitude 5.8 event occurred 7 km (4 miles) SE of Diamond Bar, CA.
The hypocentral depth is 12 km ( 8 miles).

But I'm glad I checked the threads first! lol...

Sounds like all is ok, not too much damage? No one hurt?

It sounds ike it wasn't too bad.

Im sure that in a couple hours we'll hear alls well and everyones back inside and the rides are up again..unless some track shook loose somewhere theres a minor chance it could happen.

Jade, I love Big Brother but I don't have the live feeds. What did they do in the house?

Re: GCH being safer: DLH was certainly built before the Sylmar quake (1972?) and perhaps so was PPH. They may have been retrofitted, but I wouldn't expect them to be as earthquake-resistant as structures built after the building codes were strengthened.

Yup.

I believe that they both were retrofitted, but I would still rather take my chances in the GCH.

lol well from what i see they mostly are all out side and most except jessy stayed out side ollie is saying theres gona be an after shock hes just staying out here, some one made some mean joke didnt hear it and kesha is now worried about her bf lol

I worked Security at DLH and the tallest tower (then called the Bonita towers - not sure what it's called now) is 14 stories tall. It's actually built on rollers. Everytime we had a quake, even this smallest of quakes, the people staying in that tower were always the most scared. Some didn't even want to stay here any longer and they would check out. I always told them that it was the safest tower. It wouldn't fall over, but it might go rolling down the road. :rotfl:

No injuries reported - KABC-TV has been showing some intersection (apparently in Chino) that is flooding, but I haven't seen any pictures of structural damage.

Haha! Now that would be quite the ride!

My windows were shaking but nothing else really happened, glad I don't live closer to Diamond Bar yet. That's where I'm moving in a month though so I narrowly escaped the experience!

This is an excerpt from the CNN article......

CNN's Ed Lavandera was at Disneyland in Anaheim, southeast of Los Angeles, with his family and felt the temblor. He said the shaking lasted about 5 seconds.
CNN affiliate KABC is reporting that Disneyland's rides have been evacuated.
Lavandera was standing in line for a ride when he saw the ride's top "shaking back and forth."
You could hear the metal kind of clanging around, and the ride was just ending, so for a moment ... I thought maybe something was wrong with the ride. Then I realized the ride had already stopped moving and the ground was still moving," he said.

some shake, nothing more. :) Everything seems fine.

Direct from the source! Thanks!

:) As hubby reminded me during our honeymoon cruise when I was freaked out by the ocean movement when we left the Inside Passage and went out to more open ocean, you WANT to feel that building (or ship) movement, to feel the swaying. If it doesn't sway, it's just going to break. Breaking is not good. Swaying is! :)

(I will say that hubby shared that with me the next morning when our breakfast companions complained about it...at 2am when I was panicking and calming myself down by noting that nothing was rolling out of shelves and such, he was sleeping like a little baby, having worked on oil tankers in REAL ocean waves, without all the fanciness on Radiance of the Seas close to land, LOL)

totally irrelevant, but there's a place called Sleepy Hollow a few miles SW of Chino Hills.

How about a Headless Horseman Earthquake ride?

DH is working in Corona. He sent a very brief text saying..will call..
Not sure how badly his company was hit, but emergency services want people to stay off cell phones for now.
Hope all are safe.

Can't wait to hera from him!

Is Bonita newer than the other towers? I think that building rollers started in the 1980's.

I used to work in 10 Universal City Plaza on the 37th floor. The building is on rollers. I used to get seasick on windy days.

Just slightly felt it over here in LAS. Having a cup of coffee at a favorite spot in SW Las Vegas. Just felt a slightshaking and coffee cup dance slightly on "table" Didn't think nothing of it until seeing it pop up on the internet news. Just stopped by my grandfather's house. They never felt a thing. His housekeeper has a home near La Puente(sp?) Her husband is there now and definitely got jolted. Son is working in Chinohills and is OK. Her daughter in law is on the phone now and a little shaken.
