I've been searching for a new printer, but there are SO MANY and I'm completely overwhelmed. I really only need it for basic printing (mostly coupons). I would like it to be able to scan and copy. DH would like a built-in FAX for work stuff, but isn't a dealer breaker if it doesn't have it.

Is it better to get a printer that has separate color ink cartridges? When my old printer ran out of say cyan, I'd have to replace the entire color cartridge even though I knew there was plenty of magenta and yellow left. But is it cheaper to buy them separately? I would think so, but who knows.

Does anyone have a decent printer that doesn't break the bank when you need to buy new ink?

we have a kodak esp 7200 series, it scans/copies among other things. Not sure about the fax part as we don't need it. It also has wireless with it so I can use our laptop to print as well.

Our cartridge is 25.00 plus tax for all in one cartridge....black/color.

We have had it for 2 years or so now and it hasn't been a issue.

We have Brother printers. They are Laser, the ink cartridges last a really long time (even after it says it's low you can print for a while). Ours are wifi, it copies, prints, faxes and scans. The one we have is black and white, but DH says they are also available for color. DD uses a smaller Brother at college, no problems and long lasting ink (she prints everything to edit/proof, and she writes a lot of papers).

The all in one is a 7860DW. If you go for color make sure it has separate cartridges for each color. That way if you use up all of one color you can just get that one. If we need to print in color (very rare, and mostly for our business) we just do it at Kinkos or Staples.

Cheap ink = tiny inks. Look at the size of the cartridge before deciding its cheap. Try to find printers that don't have the chips in them for the ink levels. You can have enough ink and it won't let you print, or if it's past it's expiration date it won't let you print, even when there is nothing bad about the ink itself. I hated my aunt's last printer, it was a lexmark. They make poor quality home line, business lines are a different story.

HP ink 56 is a much larger cartridge than some of the others. We do a lot of printing on just one cart, which means it takes forever to get 10 empty inks for trade in at Staples. I remember seeing a site that say "printers that use hp ink 56", and I'm sure you can google that for any ink.

Laser printers are awesome and toner lasts a long time. Colored toner can get really expensive so be mindful of that. They also blow out more dust and tend to get hotter than inkjets. So make sure the printer has open space for air.

I have an HP Color Laserjet all-in-one. The color toner will last about 1,400 copies per cartridge while the black will last about 2,400 copies. I only use it when I want something printed in color, or to use it as a copier or fax.

Yes, it is more expensive than one which uses ink, but the quality is much better and the cartridges do not clog.

I look for a printer with an ink cartridge that is easy to refill instead of getting new cartridges. I've got an HP Office Jet Pro 8600. Fax and copy, internet access for junk I never use, etc. You can get the refill kits at Staples and other places like that, its really easy to do. Saves a ton of $.

Found a post on slickdeals for a great printer. I have this model infact. It is an all in one. This model takes generic inks very well which can be bought on amazon or meritline for about $11 for 8 of them. Now that's cheap.

I have a printer that I use for things I need printed right away but if I don't I just go to the public library and you can print 10 free pages a day per library card so if I take my daughters card, mine and grandmas I can print 30 pages on their paper and ink! They also have a scanner at the library that you can use to scan your stuff for free.

Kodak (and Lexmark) have exited the printer business.

I would buy a laser printer. We have a little HP one that is a B&W laser and I think it was around $125 (its a few years old at this point). Laser printers will last you a lot longer than any inkjet.

In college my DH picked up a B&W laser printer that the Bio Department tossed out because they thought it was broken. Turns out it was just printing nonsense because it needed a software update and a new ink cartridge. Anyway, he and his roommates bought a no-name ink cartridge for $10 for it, and they easily printed at least 10,000 pages on it. We eventually gave the printer to his parents (they are teachers and print a ton), they bought a new ink cartridge and have used it now for the past year and a half. Before the laser printer they went through ink cartridges like tic-tacs.

Brother laser all in one model MFC-7360n. I got it on a gold box deal at amazon. I print coupons all the time and I just changed the starter toner after 9 months. I don't miss color printing or HP cartridges at all!

One more vote for a Brother laser printer. We had a very fancy ($300+) HP inkjet before, and it was not only extremely expensive to operate (even with reconditioned) cartridges, but not reliable. HP has really fallen since the days when you could get a 540C that would last forever.

We thought we would miss color printing, and sometimes we do, but so many places have 1 hour photo printing now that it's not an issue. Color prints from an inkjet only last a few months, anyway. Color lasers don't really give photo-quality prints, either, so definitely consider whether you'll really make use of "spot" color.

So we took advantage of a back-to-school deal and picked up a Brother all-in-one (including fax machine) for about $100. I bought a replacement cartridge (the one that comes with the printer is skimpy) but that was over six months ago and I still haven't had to install it! It is a really nice feeling not to constantly be paying for ink. Plus, it is way, way faster. When I print something, I walk up one flight of stairs to the printer and more often than not the page is already waiting for me. It is louder than an inkjet while "awake" but silent when asleep.

During last years holiday sales, I found a deal on a HP all-in-one printer on either onesaleaday.com or dailysteals.com for $20 bucks, and that included the printer cartridges. So I bought like three of them....set up one to print, then opened the others and scavanged the ink cardtidges out of them and threw the printers away.

That being said, dailysteals.com has an HP1055 printer, copier, scanner for $39 and also have ink cartridges on sale. Just good through midnight, though.

We also have a Kodak and while the ink is cheap it seems like we go through it waaaayyy quicker than we did with our HP. We've had it for five years though and it's been good to us. It's on the fritz now and we'll be looking for a new one.
I guess it won't be Kodak if they are leaving the printer business.

I finally made up my mind and bought a Brother DCPJ140W. Somehow I missed your post yesterday. I would have definitely looked into this one.

You're lucky. The last time (years ago) I had to print something at the library it was 15 cents per page. It might be more than that now.
