Looking for UK help.....

My neice is moving to England this summer and I want to get her some school clothes. She is 13...I need to know what the "in" brands are and also some style tips for fitting in.

Anything would be greatly appreciated.

Can't help you on whats 'in' for teenage girls at the moment, but you should be aware that many UK schools have a uniform - so you would need to know which school she will be attending and what their rules are before deciding what to buy.

Is she going to a UK state school. If so the vast majority of schools in this country have strict uniform codes.

We certainly believe in our instruments of torture for kids in this country. However it does help the parental pocket when everyone is dressed the same.

Wow I did not know that. They are going to be stationed at Mendenhall (spelling) Air Force base. Not sure about the school.

Well what about just weekend clothes....any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Do you mean Mildenhall in Suffolk?

My uncle was stationed there before he retired about 15 years ago.

As far as weekend clothes are concerned I can't help you much there. The teenage mind is a completely closed book to me. At the moment it all seems to be jeans and little cropped tops which show the belly button - even in the depths of winter.

Oh dear - does that make me sound old and bitter?

Umm I don't think Next is exactly "cutting edge" in most thirteen year old's eyes. In fact local research here (I asked a 12 and 14 year old) is "Next is where your Mum buys your clothes" !!!
I'd suggest a look at www.newlook.co.uk and www.topshop.co.uk for latest trends. Both are high street stores here and are known for keeping up with trends at reasonable prices-although you'll find clothes in the UK are generally more expensive than the US
Unless she's on a U.S.base school then she'll almost certainly be wearing uniform take a look at http://www.marksandspencer.com/ and... find out what is going to help her fit in :)

Thanks everyone for your help. I will be checking out those websites and getting her some new Euro duds! I am trying anything I can to help make this transition easy for her. I know moving to a new place is hard enough but a new country all together is different!

Defintaly try out topshop,when i was 13 i bought nearly all my clothes out of there,new look is also a good idea.for a good mix of ideas you could probably try out some of the department stores like Debenhams: http://www.debenhams.com . to be honest it will depend on your daughters style what kinda of clothes she wants to buy. hope thats some help. im just going on what shops i used to shop in when i was that age,feels so long ago although its actually only 4 years!

Your neice wouldn't look at all out of place in Gap gear. I don't think UK fashions are much different to US fashions.

What she'll like depends if she's a girly girl or the sort that wears baggy hipsters, hooded tops and everything black!

The fashions here really are no different. The coolest thing as far as my two teenage girls are concerned, is to wear fashions from the US which aren't available here. For several years that meant anything from Abercrombie and Fitch. Clothes from A&F are still way up there in the kudos stakes, although have probably been overtaken a tad (for my two at least) by those from Lucky Brand. They also buy from Banana Republic and Guess when we're in the States.
