DS and i would like to plant something. i would really like to have a veggie garden but dont think that i can. we live in florida. we have only been here for a few months. most of the yards here are sand! can i grow things in sand? i have never had a garden before but was thinking that this would be fun for DS and i. what if anything can i plant in the sand? i thought about buying a kiddie pool (or something similar) and filling it with soil and planting stuff that way. but i am not really sure that would work. anybody have any ideas or suggestions? thanks in advance!

I have never tried planting in sand before so I'm not sure about that, but what about planters. You can plant all kinds of veggies in there. Some veggies that work out for us in our hot Hawaii weather is green beans, eggplants, corn, and green onions. You could also plant flowers like marigolds and sunflowers to add a nice touch. Remember that you don't have to always keep a garden outside. You can also have a planter inside with herbs that you can just use for your use. Have fun with your DS.

I agree, get some planters. i grow my tomatoes in containers and it works great.

Dittos on the planters. They can be moved indoors or into shade if need be. You can grow just about anything in them too.
I've grown pumpkins and melons in a mix of sand and soil in the ground with very good results. Sand drains so quickly that not much can survive in it unless you add soil.
Good luck, sounds like fun sharing gardening with your DS.

I too agree, planters sound like your best solution. I think a kiddie pool would be too shallow for the roots.

Here in Central Florida I add LOTS of Humas and/or potting soil to each hole I dig. Works fine. :The problem, as my sister puts it, is not getting things to grow in Florida, but getting them to stop growing. Happy gardening.

thanks for the advice! i will buy planters. can i grow root veggies in them? like carrots and potatoes? or is that not possible?

marlasmom~ what is Humas?

Yes you can grow root vegetables in planters if they are deep. If you plan on doing so, I would recommend really big planting pots so that the roots are able to spread and you will be able to pull them out.

If you are looking for something larger and more permanent than containers, try raised beds. Just be sure to build them out of something that won't rot, but NOT pressure treated...............P

I agree with the others that containers and raised bed gardens would be a great way to start getting your hands "dirty"...so to speak. ;)
