Looking for some suggestions to expand my lens selection with disney trips in mind.

I'm in the market for one myself nvtsallo. I had a 50mm prime but found myself chasing the shot. I would have to back up to get the picture but then found myself having to wait until others that would walk into my shot to move because I moved back to far. It became a vicious circle. Right then and there I told myself that I would not make that mistake again.
I'm looking at the 17-50 f 2.8, the 16-50 f 2.8 or a 10-24 if I can find one of them at a reasonable price.
The only lens I have is the stock lens that came with the Sony a57, 18-55
f 3.5 5.6. You can view 4 pictures that I took with it here:

Well they are nice. I have the 24-70 2.8 ii but part of me says buy the 24/105 f4l and bring it with my 35mm prime. Do you think that is wise or save the money and bring my 24-70?

I would want a lens that I could get good in-door shots as well as outdoor like a waterfall up close. For this reason alone I would go with a wide angle a @ f 2.8 or less. That alone would make me not consider the 24-105 f 4.
Here again this is just me and what I feel I need to get first.
It's a tough choice but only you know what kind of shooting you will be doing.

I agree. I was going to bring the 24-70 2.8 and the 35mm but just wanted to bring more to the table this time. Also worried the 24-70 with no is and limited zoom will leave me wanting more.

When we went back in June 2010 I took the Sony 100, 50mm Prime, 18-55, and the 70-300. I'm the kind that wants to be prepared for any shots that come up. The bad part about this was the 50mm Prime was not good enough for indoor shots.
Like I said I will not make that mistake again.
I would load up my camera backpack and make sure I have the lens to cover any shot that comes up.

So what else are you bringing?

nvtsallo everything, extra SD cards, Filters, micro lens, cable and cords, tripod, even a mini tripod. I even take my charger for by batteries (x3) in my camera bag. If it has anything to do with my camera it's in my bag ::yes:: and I am adding to it all the time. On a trip for more then 2 days I will take my laptop and a external hard drive as a back up.
I also have another backpack that has 3 camcorders in it and all the accessories that I take.
My biggest problem is talking the DW into carrying it for me. :confused3
I have tried taking only what I think I would need but have always wanted what I left behind, so now I just take it all.:lmao:
Just consider me as an American Express Card I don't leave home without it. :rotfl:

Asking random people for advise is kinda tough lol, everyone shoots differently and for different reasons. You want wide go buy the wider one, u want shots on a dark ride by a faster one.... its user discretion, with a $3000 camera body you should have a good working knowledge of how and what you like to photograph. I made a conscious effort last trip to spend the time with my wife instead of my camera and am very pleased with my decision.

The trip before I spent so much time taking photos it was awesome and I had a blast. Hopefully I'll have a trip like that in the summer when we get to DisneyLand (maybe)! :)

Daisy14'sDH, If I did something like that I would never get my camera on another trip. :lmao:

...I was thinking the same thing.

I do but was seeking the advise of other photographers who regularly visit disney to see if there was a obvious suggestion. I have low light and the best 24-200 zoom combo available for the Canon eos system but I was torn if going wide would be good for more scenic or more/lighter reach/like the 70-300l lens. Last year was easier bc i had the 5d with 24-105 and a 50mm prime and was set but since shooting with sharper glass it seems like a waste to go buy a $1k redundant focal length for vacation so I was sharing my thoughts sorry.

I wish i could go with my nex 6 and be happy with the family but I know I will regret it. They would love it but no cool pictures to hang up then.

If you have the time theres a great Podcast all about Disney photography, I listen to it when I need a Disney fix, I actually laugh quite a bit. Its called iso5571

THye go over their gear a lot things and aspects, its been fun listening over the last few weeks how their equipment has changed and there styles ( I just found them 2 weeks ago and hae listened to the first 33 episodes in that time)

Turns out its eating up my data plan like nuts!

Thanks ill check that out.

looks like you really want a wider lens like the 16-35, 17-40, Tamron 10-24, etc.
but honestly, I'd be satisfied with your gear for a Disney trip without buying anything else!

I've just run a data plot against all Disney photos in my lightroom catalog (looking at all photos that contain "Disney" somewhere in their metadata, which amounts to roughly 900 photos) and it shows me the following about the focal lengths I've used compared the lenses you have:

only 26 of my photos are less than 24mm focal length
only 5 of my photos are more than 200mm focal length

If I run the same data plot for all my photos (nearly 2500), then I get something a little different:

Roughly 75 photos are less than 24mm focal length
Roughly 300 photos are more than 200mm focal length

Now - my "Disney" photos are not from WDW (they're from DLR and DLP) and therefore do not include Animal Kingdom. I know from experience that when I photograph animals in zoos, I tend to use my 300mm or 500mm zooms.

With all this in mind, then personally, I'd either stick with the lenses you have which wouldn't leave you missing that many shots, or if you "have" to buy another lens then I'd opt for a 300mm zoom which tends to be a good compromise of range vs portability and would prove quite useful at Animal Kingdom.

Thats a neat idea checking to see what you use the most. But.... on previous WDW trips and multiple cruises, my 12-24 stayed on my main bisy most of the time as it does now, BUT! on my lesser body I always keep a fast lens on like the 55 f1.4, or switche it over to a fast Zoom like the 16-50 or 50-135, but I've recently purchased a 70-200 f2.8 that Ive instantly fallen in love with... which means my 12-24 wont see much shooting time for awhile... again it comes down to personaly preference, shooting style, and what you want to capture in an image...
