We want to get trip insurance for our October 2016 cruise. Who do you reccomend and why? We want insurance in case something happens before or during the trip i.e medical, health, weather etc...

To get preexisting conditions coverage, most if not all insurances require that you purchase within 1-2 weeks of making the initial deposit. There are several comparison websites that can be a good starting point. But before purchasing, you should call and speak directly to get any questions answered or clarification of what is/is not covered.

Enjoy your cruise!

Our DD has health/medical issues, so we always use Travel Guard. We book it immediately after booking the first component of our trip.

we use travel guard as well for the same reason. that's the first phone call i make after i book my cruise.

There are some policies that include waiver of pre-existing conditions if you buy within 30 days after making the deposit. There is also at least one company that includes this waiver if you purchase by the time you pay on full.

Finally, not all policies apply the pre-existing condition exclusion to non-traveling family members, which means you may not need the waiver if your concern is about a sick family non-traveling family member. -- Suzanne

just looked up travel guard. Do you guys typically get the silver, gold or platinum package? What's the average you pay? Do you have to pay the full amount upfront or monthly payments?

what's the difference between disney insurance and travel guard?

DCL insurance will not cover pre-existing conditions, nor is it officially a "cancel for any reason" coverage.

The unique aspect of the insurance offered through DCL is that if you cancel, and if the insurance denies your claim under the standard policy, DCL will offer you 75% back as a credit towards another cruise. There may be time limits on that new cruise.

Enjoy your cruise!

do they cover if you get sick before the cruise? that almost happened to us this year. I had to have emergency surgery but recovered in time for the trip but barely.

Yes, DCL offered insurance covers for cancellation due to an illness that results in you being deemed unable to travel. Note that such a situation is not a "pre-existing condition" unless that illness is related to an on-going issue you've had since prior to making the travel plans. A "pre-existing condition" for travel coverage purposes is an active/current diagnosis at the time or within a certain period of time prior to when you purchase the insurance -- something like cancer or some heart conditions, etc.

We get insurance through Allianz and buy within 2 weeks because I don't want hassle over whether my sons food allergies are a pre existing condition. I have shopped around and never been able to do better for our family of 5 with their free kids option.

We used Allianz for a similar reason. I had the "pre-existing condition" clause. We went with Allianz because I called and spoke about our current conditions and they were clear that no matter what they would count as pre-exisiting so we needed to book before x date. I think we ended up spending and extra 200 for our whole cruise but it was well worth the cost.

The question of whether a health issue is a pre-existing condition is based on whether it is stable (or controlled by medication) at the time you purchase insurance and for a prior number of months (called the "look back period"). Some policies have shorter lock back periods such as 60 days and some have longer look back periods, such as 6 months.

For those with active medical conditions, it is important to note that the pre-existing condition waiver will not apply if you are not healthy enough to travel on the day you purchase the insurance. For example, if you just had surgery and your doctor tells you not to cruise until next month, even if you do not plan to sail until 2017, buying travel insurance today would not include a waiver of the pre-existing condition exclusion.

I buy gold, and its usually around $150-$200 per trip, but it varies based on age of travelers and cost of the trip. I have always paid it all at once immediately.

We get our Allianz insurance through AAA. My DD is a Type 1 diabetic so, we have to get pre-existing condition even though she is pretty controlled. Kids are also free, which is great!

That's great that he's in control, but with diabetes you never know what might happen. Better to be safe than sorry, I always say. We've been on 3 cruises since her diagnosis and have had no problems at all.
