I got stung by a bee Friday morning under my upper arm.You know, the dang bees that get attracted to kids and sugary drinks at the park, zoo, etc.

The dang thing got me good. First ,the little puncture was swollen, but as the day went on (after bee sting wipe, aloe, and cool compress) my arm started turning red.

I've never-ever been stung until now. I haven't felt sick, feverish, or numb. However, I have a huge red area that's itchy and feels like a warm spot on my arm.

Should I be worried? I haven't broken out in any way or felt nausious.

Should I be doing any thing else to treat it? How long will my arm be like this?

thanks all :goodvibes

Take some Benadryl and Advil as directed. That should help:thumbsup2

 You could try taking some benadryl to help with the itchyness. I think if you were to have a serious reaction, it would have happened before now. One of the kids I have in afterschool was stung last weekend 28 times when he accidentaly stepped on a nest. :scared: He didn't have an anaphylactic reaction, thank goodness, but his hand and arm was still itchy and swollen a few days later.

If it was a yellow jacket then they are garbage bees so who knows what it had on it's stinger.

I would first make sure the stinger is out ( Have some one check it will hurt but it's worth it.)
Then use some peroxide to help fizz anything out followed by alcohol to dry it out.

You may want to just put a call into the Doc to verify this.

I got stung on my little toe three weeks ago -- and I had the redness and itchiness that you described for TWO weeks!:guilty:

It practically drove me up the wall.

If you get stung in the future, immediately take some Benadryl and also alternate swabbing the sting with Clorox bleach and ice. (My pharmacist told me to do this.)

But still take the Benadryl (if you are NOT driving or operating heavy machinery, etc.). He told me to keep it in my system for 72 hours.

My son got stung over 6 times by yellowjackets over Labor Day weekend. His were on his ankle and the back of the leg. The stinger was still in his leg and he accidently brushed his arm against the stinger and got stung on the arm, too.His leg swelled up to almost his knee and he had a lot of stiffness, as well as redness. It took over a week for the swelling and pain to go away.

You can make a paste of meat tenderizer and water and put it on the area. It should take the swelling down.

I wouldn't knock myself out worrying about a bee sting. They suck, but on the list of things to worry about...well, they aren't real high on that list. :) Take some benadryl (generic is exactly the same drug so no need to spend more money on the name - you might as well burn your money as spend it on a name brand there, as you get absolutlely nothing different/extra for the extra dough), try a topical cream.

Measure the red area and call the doc on Monday to ask them what they think about future bee stings.

I agree with this.

It is possible you could be allergic, many times the first sting produces only a mild allergic reaction...they tend to get worse with each sting. If the benadryl helps, allergic reaction is likely.

That's what I was thinking about the stinger too, who knows where its been. Possible worse reactions  . Dang bees!

O.k, I'm off to drug myself up now. Night all and thanks for the quick replies :goodvibes

For next time... I am a pediatric nurse and whenever someone comes in our clinic who has been stung we always rub deodorant on the site. Something our docs learned. It has to have the aluminum ingredient in it. It helps ease the burning and itching. When I first did this I was thinking "You have got to be kidding!":rotfl2: but IT WORKS!!! I was stung 3 times by wasp and applied the deodorant it it helped me, and I usually have a bad reaction. Just a little FYI for next time.:)

YOu are going t think I am crazy but the next time you get a sting tape a penny on it. In a few minutes the sting will be gone and there will be no swelling. We laughed too but have tried it several times this summer and it worked every time.

DB tried it the day after a sting and said it did take some of the itch away.

Don't ask me why or how it works I just know it does.

pennys and deoderant we'll add those to our first aid kit.

My arm is still red, but it looks like the area of redness is getting larger/spreading, is that a good thing?

Is the stinger still in there? My guess is that you removed it, but if you didn't, get some tweezers and pull it out! You could just be having a little reaction, and I think benadryl should help.

If you happen to smoke, make a paste, sort of, out of the tobacco & put on it. Otherwise the meat tenderizer or deodorant as mentioned above. And, yes, take Benadryl.
