Looking for new walk around lens

I like the length of the 17-85 (If I understand correctly that would be equivalent to 28 to 136 mm) but I find it a bit slow...Are there any others out there with approximately the same length but a little faster?

Thank you to all who are trying to explain.

Check out this site.

I think you'll find it helpful.

Hi all,

Thanks for the great replies (and that's okay about hijacking the thread, it's still good discussion).

I think your questions helped me realize what I really want, and that's a faster mid-range zoom.

Having said that, I'm leaning towards the 24-70 2.8L. It does cost a bit more, but that just means I'll have to wait a little longer to get it -- no big deal.

I think what I've discovered is that the kit lens and the cheap zoom are really not bad lenses when used in the right environment e.g. outdoors with decent light (and provided you don't want to put your polarizer on and forget about it's orientation and you change focus).

But that's not the majority of my shooting, and that's where I was getting frustrated with these lenses.

Regards,

Boris

Is there mechanical or physical flaws in the Rebel line that would cause a larger lens to not work properly on them? I ask because I have the 30D and some nice lenses. I plan on using that and a borrowed XTi this summer to photograph baseball games. Will my larger lenses be a problem somehow? :confused3

All EF and EF-S lens will work just fine on a Rebel body.

However, be aware that the Rebel body is designed for consumer grade lenses. Pro and Semi-pro lenses will fit on the Rebel, but may result in more wear and tear on the body. The Pro and Semi-pro bodies are built to sustain the wear and tear from heavier Pro and Semi-Pro lenses.

For limited usage, there should be no problems.

An L lens on a Rebel body is kinda like a 12-cylinder Jaguar engine in Prius body.

Do you have any references for this? I've never heard it stated before.

Before I got an L lens for my 350D (Rebel XT) I was ready to sell it (the 350D). The pictures didn't have the sharpness or colour that I was expecting. I then tried a 70-200mm, and subsequently bought a 24-105, and have been amazed by the clarity, sharpness and richness of colour that had been lacking in my previous photographs.

I don't understand your contention at all - an L lens gives a dramatically better result on a Rebel XT than - for example - the kit lens. The evidence can be found on my hard disk :)

i'm confused with this as well, particularly since canon sells the 28-135 the weight being very close to the 24-70 L, so they are selling a lens that will wear out that body? or what weight do you think it should begin to deteriorate the body? i am comparing the 2 since i don't think anyone would consider the 28-135 anything but a consumer lens.

or is that really just camera snobbery talking;)
