Any suggestions anyone? I don't like super-detailed historical i.e. George RR Martin and I dont like 'people from todays world get transported to magical world' plots. But....if you think one is really good I'd give it a shot.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!!!

Raymond E. Feist's Midkemia novels. Start with "Magician: Apprentice" then on to "Magician: Master"

Excellent books.

Without knowing what you've read and what you may enjoy here are a couple of my favorite fantasy authors.

Mercedes Lackey, Valdemar series very good! She also has a 500 Kingdoms series that are fairy tales with a twist.

Piers Anthony, Xanth series, my all time absolute favorite fantasy series, he's what got me started with fantasy books. :)

How about Neil Gaiman?

Most everyone who is fan raves over Neverwhere, but I preferred American Gods.

I'm not sure what you've read but David Eddings has a couple of fantasy series which are really good.

I also like Melanie Rawn, Mercedes Lackey, and Katherine Kurtz (especially her Adept series).

Thanks for the suggestions so far! I am at work and am drawing a blank on authors - have read Mercedes Lackey, Raymond E Feist, David Eddings, Piers Anthony, Kathryn Kurtz but will look into Neil Gaiman and Ted Dekker.

Keep 'em coming! Appreciate it.

I think it's found under Romance (but doesn't belong there, IMHO) but the Fever series by Karen Marie Moning is so good! A friend introduced me to it several months ago and I've read it several times. My only complaint about the series is that the final book is so far away :).

Several of the books in the series have been NY Times bestsellers, and the current release debuted at #3. It's down to #12 now, but as I understand that's because it is totally sold out right now.

The reading order is:
Darkfever
Bloodfever
Faefever
Dreamfever
Shadowfever (not sure when it'll be released)

KMM has another series called the Highlander series. It's straight up romance with a little fantasy thrown in. It's not "related" to the fever series, but if you read it first you'll have a better understanding of some of the events and characters in the Fever series.

I'm currently reading the Dark Hunter series by Sherrilyn Kenyon. I'm not sure how I feel about it yet. It's too romancey for me so far. I know it's pretty popular, though.

Terry Brooks' books, starting with "the Sword of Shannara" are what we got me started on the genre years ago!

I loved those books. They are a little like Harry Potter, but more sophisticated.

I like Robert Jordan's books...The Wheel of Time series. Also Anne Mccaffrey's Pern series.

I started the Wheel of Time but after book 7 I got tired of trying to keep all the characters straight so I quit reading it. Did he ever finish the series?

Thanks to everyone so far! I have read the Sword of Shannara series, and I think it may also have been my intro to Fantasy...loved it. I found the Wheel of TIme series to drag after a few so stopped reading.

I picked up Sherilyn Kenyon's new one....I foget the title (shoot!) but it;s the 'backstory' to the main character....and I found the book a bit disturbing. The plot is good, but the description of some of the abuse he suffered when he was young was just too graphic and kinda made me feel a bit sick.

I have written down the DarkFever etc titles and will go check those out.

You guys rock!! :woohoo:

Ted Dekker's Circle Trilogy is a very intriguing mix of fantasy and modern-day suspense; well worth the read. If you want to try Book 1, Black, he's giving the ebooks away for free (this week only) if you use the code 4495. Here's the site: http://www.teddekker.com/green/m/downloadblack.php

Excellent choice! I bought the book that had all three books in one and am glad I did. It was so captivating that I couldn't put it down.

I have personally enjoyed Robbin Hobb's books. Her Assasin's trilogy and Live Traders series are excellent reading.

He died in September of 2007. Unfortunately his series was never finished, but from an email I got yesterday from Tor Books, it appears someone is working with Jordan's notes/outlines/scribbles/etc to try and bring the series to a close.

Others who have passed but did some amazing books include David Eddings and Robert Aspirin (Thieve's World and Myth, Inc.)

I love KMM but I don't really feel as tho hers are fantasy so much as romance, altho the Fever series is more fantasy. I also liked Destiny Kills which she released not too long ago, that one was very good.

I LOVE Sherrilyn's series, so much that I've read her alter ego Kinley MacGregor as well, she's very good but yes, they are very romance based.

Oh yes, Ann McCaffrey's Pern, and her Acorna series are both really good.

OH NO, you started with the wrong one!!! STOP reading that one and get Fantasy Lover, then move forward from there, then Ash's story will be so much better. Seriously, I have every one of her Dark Hunter novels, the Dream Hunters as well, and you really need to work your way to Acheron, otherwise you just won't "get it" and it will just seem to dark and depressing. Please don't give up, just start at the beginning.

I thought of another one last night, Raymond Feist, I know I read some of his books and I've probably got some in storage right now. I really need to go thru my stored books and clean them out. :)

One that no one has mentioned... Wizzards First Rule by Terry Goodkind. We liked them so much we named our youngest DD Kahlan. The series has 11 or 12 books in it. I think the series is called Sword of Truth. Margret Wise and Tracy Hickman are some of my DH favs.
