Hello smart travelers -
I'm looking for your experienced advice so I can make the best possible Oahu trip for relatives who have never been to Hawaii.
My DH an I became DVC members August 2014 then traveled to our new "Aulani home" in 2015. We were inexperienced and therefore had some dissapointments because we didn't know about getting help from this forum.
Our next trip to Aulani in June 2017 is to fulfill a bucket list wish for a cancer survivor and the first visit to Hawaii for two teens (we are also bringing our 5 and 7 year old grandchildren). I'm trying hard to plan more and make better reservations so this trip becomes a spectacular memory. (It is also our 40th wedding anniversary)
Sooooo - any tidbits or suggestions for the following will be greatly appreciated:
1. What should I request to get a spectacular ocean view for a two bedroom villa.
2. What should I request to get a delux studio with beautiful view (island? pool? ocean?) that will be near the two bedroom villa (we need both but don't have enough points for a grand villa).
3. Is it important to make reservations to attend a character breakfast?
4. Looking for any unique and kid friendly off resort activities.
Thank you so much for sharing your experiences and knowledge!
This is a valuable resource for newbies.

We are going for the first time in late May with our kids, ages 8.5 and 11, and my parents (70's). I can't answer your view questions, but I will chime in on what I can.

Yes, make character breakfast reservations at least 4+ months out for June, especially for a large group of 10. I made ours about 5 months out, but accidentally made it for the wrong day. I discovered this several weeks ago (about 3 months prior to our trip), and I have been unable to get the date I want for any time other than 0730 or nearly 10AM. People here say there is some walk-up availability once you are at the resort, but with a group of 10, I would not want to take that chance.

We are doing the zip line activity at Climbworks, as well as we have rented a private charter to take us swimming in the open ocean with spinner dolphins and to go snorkeling (http://sailhawaii.com/activities_Oahu.html). http://www.climbworks.com/keana_farms/

Our kids are still too young to do the zip line at Kuola ranch, so this worked perfectly for us.

Thank you for responding with your suggestions and recommendations .
Good to know when reservations for character breakfast should be made especially with my need to prepare a timeline/deadline for reservations. I would love to read about your trip (next month?)when you return. It will be good to hear what you thought about the Climbworks zip line and if your charter for snorkeling was fun for your kids. I'm sure you are busy but excited! Even with some of our mistakes in our first trip there we still loved it and have looked forward to returning ever since. Have an amazing time!

We will be going in July with our 6 and 8 year old boys. So I can't help you with view yet. There's a thread in her somewhere that lists the villas and the views. I'll try to find the link!

I would say to also sign the kids up for aunty's as soon as you can so you can get them signed up for the free activities. I am not able to sign up yet (90 days prior) but plan to as soon as I can.

Another thing to think about is if you want to rent and cabanas or casabellas as those seem to fill up fast.

We will be going with my parents who will be celebrating their 41 anniversary and we will also be celebrating our 15th anniversary. Congratulations on 40 years!

I would also suggest renting a cabana 180 days out. Finding chairs for that large group will be very difficult.

We have done ziplining at climbworks the past 2 years, and I posted some details on a couple of other threads recently. we love it and highly recommend that activity.

I could not make a character breakfast res online, but they had a great deal of availablity once I got to the resort. she told me they have a lot more flexibility on site, and I had my pick of pretty much any date or time. That said, I had a group of four and I would not want to risk it with 10 so would try to make a reservation as soon as it opens.

Below are a couple of links with view info that I found recently when trying to sort this out for myself.

Here is the link to the thread about booking Aunty's ahead of time, which is very recommended particularly is busy times like summer. http://www.disboards.com/threads/auntys-free-activities-registration.3489715/

I second the advice about the cabanas. Book one at 180 days if you can. They are very pricey but that can be spread over your group. Not sure how strict they are on the limit of 8 people per cabana? You don't pay at booking, just on day of, so there is no harm in reserving early. I tried for the executive lanai at around 3-4 months out, for a Tuesday, and it was booked. I was able to get a cabana that day, though no guarentee that it will be in the area I asked for (they assign them the night before). I rented a cabana for a Sunday and the following Saturday (the Sunday is during Memorial Day weekend) at just over 6 months out, and was not first to do so for the days we wanted. So key is to book early.

Thanks for the kind words. We are super excited to all be going to Oahu for the first time. It's such a bucket list item for my parents to go to Pearl Harbor, and this trip ticks that box and many more! I will definitely post a trip report when I return. May not be as elaborate as all of the talented posters here, but I will do my best! Sounds like you are in for a great trip and congratulations on your anniversary!!

Agree with all of this. We rented ours 170 days out for a group of 18 and we got the last two for our week.

Thank you crystal1313. I'll have to look into the cabanas and casabellas. We have a couple of adults who need to use caution in the sun so that will be a way to have some protection.
Good reminder about Aunties- our grandkids are the right age to really enjoy the activities so I'll put that on my to do list.
I bet you are more and more excited to be on your way! I would like to hear about your stay and if you discovered a fun way to celebrate your anniversaries! Best wishes for a memorable time!

We are heading to Aulani for our first Hawaii trip. Is there a map online of where cabanas are located? Can anyone suggest which locations are best?
Thanks!

Thank you so much Vikequeen for the dis board links. The information about room locations and views is exactly what I needed.
It's good to hear confirmation about the cabanas and I'm sold on putting the Climbworks zip line on our itinerary too!
I'm so relieved to see all the suggestions others are providing. This community is a powerful tool for reliable information and insight from other's travel experiences.

We just returned from Aulani and my kids were the same age as your grandchildren so thought our trip report may be helpful. Yes, make the character breakfast early (can do it online). We had a 2bed OV as well and requested Ewa Tower overlooking Waikohle Valley and was a great unit (#1450)

Here is my report:
I wanted to do my part to "pay it forward" on trip reports since I used these boards VERY frequently during the past year while planning our Aulani trip. Hope this helps someone along the way!

Demographic info: as a bit of background, we are a family of 4 with a 7 yr old daughter & a 5 yr old son. We live only an hour from WDW in FL and are BLT owners and go there for long weekend stays(or longer) at least 5 times a year and then sometimes will just go over for a night or day. We have stayed at all WDW DVC resorts and we have also been to Disney Vero Beach. (Next year Hilton Head and Grand Californian are on our list!) This was our first trip to Aulani.

Flight: as many from the East coast have remarked it is a long trek out there. I would say no less than 6 nights are required for such a distance (we went for 7 nights).

Car: we decided to rent a car so we could have flexibility and with DVC no parking to pay for. Car was expensive to have but in our view, worth it.

Room: We stayed in a 2 bedroom ocean view villa. Very well appointed. Awesome views of sunset! Stayed in Ewa Tower. Stopped at Target on way in - exit off H1 before Aulani. Food prices were much better than I expected! (Wine too). Very happy we did that.

Resort: Beautiful as everyone remarked as well. Beach was very nice too. it is a Pacific beach and living on the Gulf coast of FL with white, sugar-like sand it is different. I would not say it is the most beautiful beach I've ever seen but very nice given the fact that it is the Pacific (go into Waikiki and note the difference - last time we were in Waikiki was about 10 yrs ago and think it continues to lose some of its charm). Water slides were fun and not crowded as many others stated - maybe waited in line 10 minutes at height. My 5 yr old like the Menehune bridge play area and both like lazy river and family infinity pool.

Pool chairs: we were there Holy Thursday (Thurs before Easter) through the following Thurs. I expected large crowds the first few days and then to taper off. The reverse was the case. There is no question you have to get there at 8am to find a pool chair. Beach chairs were much easier to get and since we spent most of our time there, was not an issue for us (plus w 7 & 5 yr old, we don't get to sit in the sun!)

Beach toys: kayaks rent out early but did do it one day. Boogie boards can be hard to get as well (free) but you just have to watch people going up to return them and pounce!

Restaurants: We ate at all locations on property. I am not a buffet fan but actually liked the Makihiki selection better than Ama Ama. (Did both breakfast and dinner at Makihiki). Loved Monkeypod across the street as well as Roy's (slightly different from mainland locations due to the agreement Roy made with Bloomin Brands) and great selection for our kids. On our last night our kids chose to go to Monkeypod after trying all of them.

Characters: They have an extension you can call each morning to find out where the characters will be. Lines were never long - maybe 10 min wait at most. Kids saw all of them that were there, including Duffy. Loved that.

Sunset photo session: SO happy we did this. This is the planned one. Great job. Plus then photopass dvd was only $49 instead of $99. We had over 200 photo pass photos - took them every chance we got. And if you have a My Disney Experience account with a Gold annual pass or higher, they will download to your account for free actually. Just enter the photo pass numbers.

Aunty's Beach Club: Went the first morning to check it out. Despite pre registering my kids, neither one had any interest going there! (We were surprised bc they loved it on the Disney Dream cruise last year). They did not attend anything so no info to share on that. They really like just hanging out with us on vacation and know that time is limited so will enjoy it now! lol

Off-site: Took a half day to go to Dole Plantation and North shore. Kids really liked Dole. it is touristy but I did not think as bad as some have said. I thought it was good for kids. It was good to get out a bit too. Also went down to Waikiki one morning to walk along there and see the "city" (I used to work in Honolulu about 20 yrs ago so it was fun for me to reminisce :) Kids got to see Diamond Head from beach view & that was good enough for them.

Summary: We used DVC points and frequent flyer miles so for us, it was a Spring Break that made sense. (And we LOVE Disney) Our kids have not really seen "mountains" as Floridians so they loved that aspect of it. We could see ourselves going back in 3 years or so when the kids are older and we can do more activities off site. Plus, with Atlantis announcing that they will be building in Ko Olina, this will open more restaurants etc. To put in perspective, last year we went to Beaches in Turks & Caicos and were hesitant since we are a Disney family but ended up really enjoying ourselves there. This was similar w/out the all inclusive and the rooms at Disney were MUCH nicer. However, given that we can get to Turks in 2.5 hrs it makes more sense for us to go back there next Spring Break. I dream about Disney opening a Caribbean DVC resort someday :) I understand what some were saying is that it could be like being at a water park and beach anywhere so why fly so far. Totally get that perspective. For us, it was nice to get the kids to see different geography and give them a new experience. But again, not some place we would go annually.

PLEASE feel free to ask me any questions because I am sure I am forgetting many aspects of our trip (jet lag setting in!).

I will be traveling to Aulani for the first time in June with a group of 10, and one thing we have done, is make dinner reservations. We made multiple dinner reservations for the week with days of the 180 mark and one evening our time of choice was already unavailable. Ten for dinner takes planning. We also set up the character breakfast that early with no problems. Also, just to note, when you've got 10 people, you've got to call to make your dining reservations, only 9 or less can be done online. Hope that helps.

Just wanted to say, "Hi!" and we'll be next door at the Marriott for four weeks mid June to mid July next year! It will be just me and my DD (she'll be 18 then) for the first two weeks, then my DH and DS (20) will join us.

We went with a big group in 2013 (12 total for part of the time), and we found it more fun to grill and have a couple of big meals together that way! It's expensive to eat out, especially looking at the prices at Aulani and the new restaurant that just opened at the Marriott. Mostly we do lunches out at local places when we eat out (our favorites include Sushi Bay in Kapolei and Willow Tree in Kailua).

The excursion swimming with the spinner dolphins is fun; we did that years ago! My DD especially loved it, and we got her since then prescription lenses in a snorkel mask (they're expensive but her eyes are pretty bad - I need to get new lenses for next year). She was 10 that trip I think.

The kids and teens would probably enjoy the flea market one day. I'd also suggest since it's a first trip for some to do things like Pearl Harbor, driving up to the north shore, and of course Dole Plantation.

Part of the trip, DD and I are going to leave the boys and go to Hilo for a couple of days - she wants to see part of the Big Island and it's her high school graduation trip also! Plus my 50th birthday!

Sorry to hijack the thread, but did you get the prescription lenses through your eye doctor? I need to do this if I want to see anything, but was having a hard time figuring out where to get a prescription mask. (and I'm extremely jealous of your long trip. We were at the Marriott for 9 days last year and had a great time).

I went to a local dive shop here in Columbia, MD to buy them, so they could fit the mask properly for her head. Just brought her Rx for her glasses. The lenses come in a type of range, so not quite as exact as regular glasses, and they can be changed. Like -2.0 to -2.5 or something like that (she's way worse than that though).
