What was it called when a group (whether it be a baseball little league game, cheerleaders, girl scouts, etc) stood outside of a store collecting money in their little buckets?

I can't remember what we called it but it's bugging me to no end.

No. I know people call it that along with panhandling and I'm sure other things. LOL And yes, that's exactly what it was but when you director said to you...."make sure you're here at 8am on Saturday morning. We'll be (insert term here) at Walmart that morning" Or something like that.

I just KNOW there is a certain word they used but I'm drawing a blank.

Well, when stores don't want that activity to happen, they post a sign that says "No Solicitors Allowed". So I think it's called solicitation.

Begging....
haha I was going to say that. We call it canning around here. But most of our HS teams etc usually bag groceries to earn money. I think people will give a bit more for a service.

I think we called it "tag day"

why? I don't know?!?!

fundraising
soliciting donations

accost, apply, approach, ask, beg, beseech, bespeak, bum, cadge, call, canvass, challenge, claim, come on to, crave, demand, desire, drum*, drum up*, entreat, exact, go, hawk, hit on*, hit up, hustle, implore, importune, inquire, mooch, panhandle, pass the hat, peddle, petition, postulate, pray, promote, proposition, query, question, refer, request, require, requisition, resort, seduce, seek, sponge, steer, sue for, supplicate, touch, tout, turn, whistle for

Begging....

Thats what we call it around here. I absolutely hate having to go grocery shopping on a weekend day because of all the "begging". You can't help but be bombarded by them going in or coming out.

Hawking??

But I use it more to describe the guys at the entrance of a sports arena/stadium that are selling programs, concessions, memorabliia, etc.

we called it fundraising regardless of what we did to get extra money.

I don't know if the location makes a difference, but I have heard it called a 'boot drop' when they are charity fundraising adults at a stoplight at town center. I think it started with firefighters collecting and having people toss coins from their car into a firefighter boot while they were stopped at the light, but I have heard it called a "boot drop" for other charity collections too.

You know, I find that just as annoying. I wouldn't mind so much if the grocery stores only put them at half of the registers so you could pick one without them, but they don't.

If they have a really, really big bucket, it might be called lobbying. :rotfl2:

you are not alone. There was a lot of complaining about that too. People should have choices so now there is only one weekend a month kids can bag groceries around here. It has hurt the teams. Now most teams have to come up with other creative ways to earn a buck. I know when my son was in HS each season of track had about 70 kids and we had to pay for everything-busses, uniforms etc. And most of the meets were in central Florida and we had to travel about 7-8 hrs for each meet. It was horrible trying to raise money. Hotels, gas and food was very expensive and it hurt the parent's wallets a lot. Too bad they have to go thru that.

jkumping off my soapbox...
