Looking for a few good books to read...

Cheapmom, I agree, most of James Patterson's books are not light vacation reading. I always want fun reading material when I travel. I am reading METRO GIRL by Janet Evanovich right now and it is great, just like all her Stephanie Plum books.
I am also going to get SKINNY DIP, sounds like fun. I have not read any of his books yet.

Another vote for the numbered Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich--but also a protest (politely, of course) against the earlier post who recommended these fun leisure reads for females--these are just plain great vacation/relaxation reading for pleasure books--I'm a guy who loves these books, and I'm not alone among the males of the species.

In fact, DW and I share these w/ DSIL and D-neighbor. Waiting for 10 Big Ones to come out in paperback--just love the feel of a paperback in hand while in a poolside or beachside lounge chair.

And of course, the Passporter Guide to DCL.

Thought I believe they have all been mentioned, they deserve another vote. I found the following books to be impossible to put down:
Angels and Demon
The DaVinci Code (illustrated addition now available-very cool)

All the Harry Potter Books (and I'll be 26 on Sunday)

The Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon (Incorrectly classified as romance in my opinion. There is a love story but it's so much more involved than that.)

I also enjoyed Memiors of a Geisha by Authur Golden.

I am almost done with When Will Jesus Bring the Pork Chops? by George Carlin. It's pretty amusing though not a novel.

Prior to that I read Studio 69 by Lisa Marklund. She is a Swedish author, I believe the book may have been a translation. It was really good but I don't know if you can get it in the states.

After reading and hearing so many recommendations for the Diana Gabaldon Outlander series, I purchased the first few books from Amazon. I have to say that I'm having a difficult time getting "into" the first book. Was this the experience of others who are in love with this series?

The Harry Potter are some of the best books I have EVER read!! I can't recommend them highly enough.

Nora Roberts is a favorite author of mine. :) Categorized as romance, but she's such an incredible writer. The sheer delight of reading her work should get you past the embarrassment of reading a romance novel.

I used to be a huge Patricia Cornwell fan. Bought her books without even reading the inside cover. But it seems to me that her work has grown darker and darker to the point that I get depressed from reading it. Can't say as I'm much of a fan anymore.

I was surprised that until the next to last page, no one had mentioned Nicholas Sparks' books. I think they are a great read.

I'm a big fan of Patricia Cornwell and always look for the next one.

If you want something really funny, check out The Nanny Diaries. It's an easy read and extremely funny.

logan1 2000, sorry, I didn't know men read her too. I am very glad to hear this. She is just too funny! Have you read Metro Girl yet? As good as any of the Plums. Have you tried the Bubbles books? (Sarah Strohmeyer)

The best! (However, I don't think the last one was as enjoyable...perhaps 'cause she made us wait to long for the release.)

DVCajun - I had a hard time getting into the first Outlander book, too, and I'm the one who brought them up here! The first one gets better and then the following ones are even more interesting and fun. One of the great things is the way everything starts to intertwine, but you have to get those threads going first. Of course, I also know people who just couldn't get into it, especially if they had a hard time accepting the time travel thing. I don't have a problem with suspension of disbelief, though - the Harry Potter books are among my absolute favorite of all time!

I enjoyed reading "The Diary of Bridget Jones' on my last vacation - funny, light and a great airport book.

The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger was a fabulous read! I LOVED it! I think its a great vacation read!
"The underlying story concerns Henry, a librarian at the Newberry Library in Chicago, and Clare, his artist wife. Henry suffers from CDP (Chrono-Displacement Order) which whisks him from the present to another point of time (usually the past). One minute he may be in the stacks of the Newberry Library in 2003, the next minute he may find himself in a field (probably naked) in Michigan with his future wife as a child sometime in the early 1980's."

I like Nancy Kress, a sci - fi author.

I like Dean Koontz for the most part, but particularly LOVE Watchers, Lightning and By the Light of the Moon.

I have read The Talisman by STEPHEN KING, PETER STRAUB several times, LOVE it!

Cynthia Heimel books crack me up (including the titles) " If You Can't Live Without Me, Why Aren't You Dead Yet" and "Get Your Tongue Out of My Mouth, I'm Kissing You Good-Bye"

I also like Amy Tan books. Bought my first Amy Tan book years ago at the Grand Floridian!
