Looking for a counter service meal at Hollywood Studios

We're planning to lunch at Pizza Planet when we visit in Nov. We went ate there on our last visit and the kids liked it. 4 of us shared 2 meal deals with pizza, salad and dessert. It wasn't 4 star but it wasn't bad either. About the same as mall pizza.

It is the only meal we have actually been able to eat at DH. We will be going back again.

I am wondering ?WHY? are they all so horrible? I can list off a few places in each park I love to eat CS, so why is HS so bad?

Very good question!:confused3

Another vote for Rosie's. It's right across the street from the entrance to Fantasmic. It's our tradition to load up with food from Rosie's then find a seat in the theater and leisurely eat our waiting time away while the rest of the theater fills up. The selection is minimal but the food is good albeit not good for you. The large slice of chocolate cake can't be beat for the price, which is cheap when served on a foam plate without a waiter:lmao:

Backlot Express - good meals, covered, plenty of seating - next to kids playground for Honey I shrunk the kid

Toy Story Pizza planet - decent pizzas and fun for the kids

Studio catering - never tried but menu looks good

Pizza Planet is truly the worst "pizza" I have ever eaten. But I also agree not to bother leaving the park for lunch and then trying to come back again.

If you can just do a TS like Sci Fi otherwise I understand that the Flatbread Grill (?) is pretty good for a pork sandwich

We always eat at Toy Story Pizza Planet. The pizza is okay, no its not wonderful. But we ate, played a few arcade games, and were on our way for more fun in the park. I think the kids would like it!

Studio Catering Company is the one right next to the Honey I Shrunk the Kids playground. I enjoy the Greek salad there.

Backlot Express is over next to the Jedi Training Academy stage.
They have a tasty salad on their menu with black beans, fried plantains, and a zesty chimichurri dressing. Yum!!

We had heard the Commissary was bad, but me, being the Ill try anything once kinda girl, tried it when we went in March, and it was B-A-D!

The food was cold, and I don't mean lukewarm, including my burger. Even my kids didn't like it. Their fries were nasty, and my husband said we would NEVER eat there again.

Some people have had okay experiences there, but i am just putting my 2 cents in. I would rather starve.

If we need to eat CS we usually Have Backlot it is the only cs place we somewhat like there.

Oh my! I SO would NOT eat at ABC Commissary. It was the worst meal we had at WDW. That was the only CS we visited at HS when we were there, so I don't have any alternatives for you, but I can tell you that the Flatbread Grill (back then it was Backlot Catering, I think) sure seemed to have better aromas and a better menu at that time...

Good luck!:thumbsup2

Our group of 14 chose Studio Catering Co. last week and it actually worked out really well. We arrived at about 11:15, just before it opened and had our pick of tables. The kids ( 8 of them aged 4 to 17) all checked out the menu while we waited for the registers to open. DS 16 didn't eat anything on the adult menu so our CM was great when we asked if he could substitute the Uncrustable from the kid's menu. She let him have the PB&J, 2 packs of grapes and kid's chocolate milk, plus his adult chocolate milk and adult dessert for one CS credit :worship: DH, DD & I all had the pulled pork w/ chips and youngest DS had the Caesar wrap (he was a little uspset that his didn't come with chips :confused3 ). DSister's family had a variety of meals as well and everyone was satisfied, no complaints!

I definitely wouldn't stress about trying to get out of the park, this CS was on par with most other ones we had last week. The thought of everyone's mood swing had we rushed to leave or even worse, had we wasted too much time trying to get somewhere else for a CS and everyone been starving... :scared1:

I would strongly recommend you take an afternoon break and go to one of the resort counter services. Seriously, DH and I cannot eat at any of the counter service establishments at DHS.

Hollywood Studios is a short bus ride over to the Pepper Market at CSR. The ribeye steak and potato's is one of the more expensive counter services meals available and always delicious. I am a big fan of the chicken nachos, also available at the Pepper Market:yay:

Enjoy

Hi, I am doing research on all the counter services. I went to allears.net and hit dining and then menus. I have pulled all the counter services in the parks off and put them in my word processor. I also have taken my resorts and if their happens to be another resort close by their menu too. I then went down through them and highlighted things my family likes. I also highlighted interesting meals for my little ones because they all seem the same so I am highlighting the unique entrees that they would like also.(to make sure we possibly hit that cs for variety for them) I then am highlighting all the desserts we like on the cs, because most I could do with out! The next thing yet to do is analyze them and see which ones have the entree pick with the dessert and hopefully a good childs meal. I am also planning on printing them out for the trip so we can look at them the night before or morning of or in the park choice of the day because the first few days go as planned and then it changes and what you feel like eating changes so if I have the menu we will spend less time deciding what we want to eat by looking at the menus and then heading to that location!:cool1: At least this works best for my husband. I can pretty much decide before hand I like this cs and stick with it. My husband more depends on what he feels like for the day.(which I do, but him more) I am happy as long as I got to eat the different variety of food I wanted for the trip. He's definately more the mood for the day.

Know with all that said.... I started a thread "What's your favorite counter service in each park?" It is interesting to note that DHS had the most comments that people didn't have a favorite and then I read your thread, now I know why!

So what is my two cents?:goodvibes I would say off the top looking at your kids ages- Pizza Planet. My kids liked it. But with peoples comments it made me stop and think. I think I remember AK pizza being better. But it was still a good meal. My kids didn't complain, it was pizza. You can also get the Mickey rice crispy treat, we like those. Quite a few mentioned Back lot Express. It has a good mix of variety for cs adults and the kids can have chicken nuggets or sloppy joe. (this is the only sloppy joe I have seen for kids meals if you have any takers and my kids love chicken nuggets) And then there is ABC Comm. I hope it hasn't gone down hill because I loved the fried fish!!(very deep fried though!:rolleyes1 ) I don't know how good anything else is there though. Not as good variety. But looking at the kids again they have chicken nuggets and cheeseburgers. Let me tell you in the parks cheeseburgers on the kids meals are far and few between.:confused3 I know I didn't give you much variety for adults, thats harder and too much writing. I gave you and other readers the highlights of my research on the kids meals and their really isn't any exciting desserts. Probably the Mickey rice crispy treat at Pizza Planet. We most honestly have eaten at different places and meet back up. Not ideal, but it has worked. I think one time the majority got pizza and one of us ran somewhere else and met back over at Pizza Planet to eat. Another time My husband and some kids ate at Rosies and I ran to ABC Comm and ran back, my food was still piping hot. Def. not ideal, but I used to run. And it wasn't busy in Sept. My other idea is what others have already said and we do. Is go back to your resort in the mid day heat for naps for little ones and or pool time where it is cooler and you miss the mid day heavy time! But if your like me, I think it is easier to feed little ones before we leave the park and then put them down for naps when we get back!;) We leave early in the morning(w/ cereal in our rooms- we bring cereal and buy milk), eat lunch at 11- 11:30 and are heading out of the parks when it is so hot! I find little ones, at least mine early to rise are hungrier before lunch and supper meal times. Hope you got something or someone else. Good luck!

Oh, btw I don't agree to go somewhere else and come back. Maybe if it was just me and my husband, but no way with kids in tow unless you are heading out of the park around lunch and going somewhere else. It is def. a BIG time waster!!!!!

This is what I love:love: about the DISboards, you have people like this that really care about others and want to give great advice that they are willing to commit to this type of detail. I don't like to use the word but, KUDOS, to you:woohoo:

I love pizza planet...I like it because you can get mickey cryspi treats as a dessert and I love Toy Story so I love the theme of the place.

DD has informed me that we will NOT be sharing this meal (we share all CS meals - too big for 1 in the Sept heat). She absolutely loves this sandwich and I have to admit it is pretty good :thumbsup2 . Not sure if the name of this eatery has been changed? Flatbread Grill? It's opposite the entrance to the Backlot Tour and next to the HISTK playground.

I thought the pulled pork sandwich at this place was the most disgusting thing I've ever tried to eat. They need to get a Southerner to show them how to make BBQ. Better yet, they probably shouldn't even try.

Thanks, I like it when people give details like that too!!:goodvibes It always amazes me when people on this board take the time to give replys! And then sometimes you get those little extras that really helped you! The Disboards are great, they have made a good trip awesome!!! Thanks everyone!!!!:grouphug:

BTW I don't always have the time for answers like that, but I try when I have time because I appreciate them.:goodvibes

Last year the girls (me and DD) had pizza at Catalina Eddies, while the boys (DH and DS) went to Toluca Turkey Legs for, you guessed it, turkey legs. We were on the dining plan, so the girls got pizza, drink and dessert, while the boys got turkey leg, drink and a bag of chips for our CS credits. Toluca also doesn't have a kid's menu so the kids can get the adult meal here when on the DDP.

So you were able to get the turkey legs for a CS? We will have to do that! Dh has been trying to figure out a way to pull that off since we first went in 2005.

Yes, it counted as 1 CS credit. Since they do not have desserts there, DH and DS were given a bag of chips. This was last year (Nov of 2007), so I hope they still do this as the boys can't wait to go to DS for their turkey legs.
