Looking for a book, but

I don't know the title or the author. I know this is not going to be easy, but I thought I might give it a shot asking you all. I overheard 2 women talking about it a couple weeks ago, and I wrote down the author, but I threw it out last week by mistake.

Anyway, from what I remember, in the book, they talk about another book that doesn't exist but makes you feel like you have read it. I also remember that the author was a man, and I don't think it was his only book. I know this is not a lot of detail, but maybe someone knows what I am talking about

Sounds interesting--but I am confused. Is the author writing about a book he has never written.....or is it a character lying about a book he has never written.
