I am beginning the basic planning for a Christmas trip next year. I am assuming that if I can plan to be in WDW before Orlando schools let out for the holiday I should be good to go as far as facing huge crowds. Does this sound reasonable?

The crowds steadily build after Dec. 15, or so.

Everything is relative, of course.
The crowds will really SPIKE starting about Dec. 24-25… and hold on through Jan. 1.

I love to hear other people planning late 2015 trips. Since our 2014 trip is a no-go I have my wheels turning for 2015 like you. We went this past year from the 16th through the 22nd. That was a Monday through Sunday. We figured most schools (Orlando and beyond) probably wouldn't get out until at least Friday the 20th and I think we were pretty spot on with our thinking. The crowd levels were VERY manageable until the weekend and then they started to pick up. On Sunday the 22nd when we left it was crazy with everyone arriving.

If you look ahead to 2015, Christmas falls on a Friday so it's hard to say if schools will be out the whole week and return on January 4th or if they will let out mid-week and return a little later into January. I wouldn't limit your thinking to Orlando area schools as many families travel to Disney for Christmas and wait to go until school is out.

Currently looking to book an early December 2015 trip myself. Looking at past info, rates are low (which usually coincides with low crowds) starting the weekend after Thanksgiving, the next week they go up a bit, then a bit more the following week, then you really start getting the Christmas crowds and the higher rates to match. I'm currently planning to be in WDW from Dec. 5th through the 15th, and I think things will remain relatively sedate during that time. Regardless, the closer you stay to Christmas the worse it will get. My last time going in December you could almost feel the crowds getting worse by the day. And of course Christmas through New Years is supposedly crazy.

We too are planning on a Christmas trip next year. Leaving day after Thanksgiving and driving down. Glad to see I'm not the only one :)
