Just after 5 yesterday my boss came to me and asked to speak to me in private. We have had some personel changes here over the last few days so I had no idea what this was about.

We stepped outside and he said that he had recieved a phone call from the head of personel in Syracuse asking permission from him to speak to me about possibly taking a new position in the company....IN MEMPHIS!! I told him I would listen to the offer but I would have to think about any kind of a move.

I would love to be back near family, but on the other hand Orlando has very many fine things to offer here as well. All Memphis has as far as I am concerned is family for me.

Give me some help here folks.......how do I decide??

I would just listen to the offer. If it sounds great and you could be close to your family then maybe it would be a good move. On the other hand if it doest sound right for you then maybe just stay put.
Either way I wish you the best in making your decision.

I think you have to honestly ask yourself "where am I going to be the happiest living, Orlando or Memphis?" If you are happy with your current position and where you are living now, I would not take the new position. Then you have to think about the new position...would you be happier? And I am sure you love your family very much, but how importantant is it to be closer to them?

This probably doesn't really help, sorry. But you have big decisions to make, so, if they are not pressuring you at work to make an immediate decision, I would sit down and write all the pros and cons on a piece of paper and really think on it.

Good luck in whatever you decide.

I dunno, TVT, that's a hard one....

Go with your gut, I know you'll make the best decision. I would NEVER leave Orlando if I ever got there, though, it's so ME! But only you know if it's you...

Let us know what you decide.

Listen to the offer. That is the only way you can make an decision. Good luck!

I would definitely listen to the offer. When I have to make a decision like this I look at it from short and long term benefits/disadvantages for my personal and professional objectives.

It sounds goofy but I actually make a chart and list everything out -- good and bad -- and it helps me make the decision.

Good luck in your decision making.

Tony, you can't play golf everyday in Memphis :) I think you love Orlando way too much to go back to Memphis.

Is the Memphis position a promotion?

If you reject Memphis will there still be a position for you in Orlando? For how long?

If you reject Memphis are future promotion possibilities cancelled or curtailed?

Some important things to think about.

(Will they pay relocation to Memhis? Buy out your lease or whatever and pay moving expenses.)

Man Tony...that WOULD be a very hard decision. When you say family - I guess it would depend for me HOW MUCH family is there...is it just your parents or do you have siblings there...to me being close to my parents would be important to me. But it would also depend on the offer. Is it better than what you have? Would it be a better job than what you have??? Would you be REALLY happy being there - not only professionally but personally?

I agree with some of the others - although being near my family would be the most important choice for me....it would be VERY hard to leave Orlando. But I would have to make the choice based on the job and if I'd be happy.

Good luck and, yes, please keep us posted......

Definitely listen to what they have to say as far as the position in Memphis. If it's a promotion or a great opportunity (with more $$), it definitely might be worth considering.

Plus, it's not like the job's in Nebraska or anything -- you'd be close to family and still not that far from Florida. :)

What I do know is that it would be a lateral move. No expenses paid by the company. If I decline the offer it won't have any effect on my position here. Maybe I should go over to EPCOT today and find me a thinking bench! ;)

HEY! What's so bad about Nebraska??!?!?! LOL!

I know, the distance is what you are referring to! :D

Good luck TVT, I think you have some good advice here. Take into account all of the factors.... how long your current job will be there for you and what happens if it is eliminated.... that would be the biggie for me.

Hopefully after you ask a few questions and listen to the offer in Memphis, things will fall into place and it will be obvious to you what you need to do.

Lateral move, no relo... I would have to do some serious thinking about that one.

Now coul d you negiotiate relo? I know in essence you can write the relo off your taxes as moving expenses (depending on the miles and if the employer pays or not.. my understanding is if the employer pays no tax write off for you)

Do you miss your family? What about the remaining months on your lease? What can be done about that?

Tony...I think you just answered your dilemma...Epcot would not be there to got and think at. Memphis has it's great attributes, like most places, but if you are sure declining would in NO WAY jepordize your current/future status w/ the co., I would stay put. If you own a home, it would cost you about $20G in moving and realtor expenses to relocate w/out any assistance. Family has it's positives too, would that be enough to fill in what you would miss about Orlando? You sure don't want to resent making a move based on family alone. Remamber...they can also move in the future.
I am a misplaced person tho...Florida wannabe....so my judgement is MAJORLY biast!;)

Who the heck do you work for that has a head of anything in Syracuse? And how can I contact them to take your position in Orlando when you move to Memphis! :jester:

One other important thing...I don't know what line of work you are in, but is there a market for your skills in Memphis if this new position were to fold, or not to your liking? Would they guarantee a position still be in Orlando for you? Would you have trouble finding another co. in Orlando if you decided to stay put and they decided that was you not being a "team player" ? I know in this job market there are NO guarantees...my thoughts are most people are not happy in their line of work, but you have to work....so if you don't like your job OR where you live it is a depressing combination. At least you have some controll over enjoying where you live if the job is ever a negative.

...I knew I should have picked North Dakota... :teeth: :p

Seriously, Tony, if it's lateral with no added benefits, unless there's greater job security or better opportunities for advancement with the Memphis position, it sounds like you're better off where you are now. :)

Hmmm why did the person want you for a lateral move? And why would your boss "let" you go for the lateral? Is Memphis the place where you will get promoted?

They only way I would move for a lateral is that *if* you don't move and are labeled that way are they going to pass over you? Or is their a promotion in your future in Memphis? Or is your boss trying to give you a hint *wink-wink*(your job will end or you will move up in the company by taking this postion)...I would ask him what do you think?

Good Luck

Tony, will this help you decide?
Right now it is 33 degrees. This is the third day we have been above freezing, last week it was around 26 for a high most days. It is grey, foggy, chilly, and I'm looking out the window at dead yellow grass ( remember that?) The Mayor is up to his old tricks (we call him King Willie) and the city council is battling the school board and it all will lead to yet another round of bickering and wasted tax dollars.
The MAJOR THING.....it is much easier to play golf in short sleeves than in a parka:D
