Look at this photo: does Sophia Loren look like a hoochie?

Edited: my original thread title was "is Sophia Loren a hoochie". I changed it because I didn't intend this thread to be about Sophia Loren. I was just using her photo to illustrate the style of the 1950s. I do not feel that Sophia Loren is a hoochie.

I love this look. I think it's feminine and elegant and beautiful. This is the way women dressed in the 1950s. But I have a feeling if we saw a woman at a party dressed like this she'd be called a hoochie. Why could women dress in wiggle skirts and show cleavage in the 1950s but today is sort of a no-no? I wish we could dress like this again.

Thoughts?

I think SL looks stunning except for her abnormally small waist, amd I would feel the same if I saw her today.
I'm not a fan of the pointy breast look of the other woman, and I'd definitely have something to say about it if I saw her at a party

The only reason another woman would be making catty remarks about a female that looked and dressed like SL, would be because the green eyed monster.

It's not the pointy bra and small waist I'm thinking about. It's that back then women wore very tight clothes and it was acceptable. Nowadays, people look down on adult women in tight clothes.

Even Shelly Winters, who was a larger woman, wore shape-showing clothes. It was really the style back then and I'm wonder why we have problems with it as a society these days but not back then.

I had never seen that pic of sophia as a blond-she was a knockout!:thumbsup2

The problem-back then the outfit was worn at an evening event with likewise clothed women

Today the hoochies wear it, sequin, low cuts etc all the time

A lot of women who wear tight clothes today are wearing tight clothes that were made for teenagers. Plenty of older women wear form-fitting but age appropriate clothing today and don't get called hoochies or anything like that. It's all about dressing for your age (and body type!)

As much as people want to say that this is not the case , I have to agree.

Sophia Loren was a hoochie-mama no matter what she was wearing! :rotfl:

I think it depends on where one is going in a dress like that. SL was and still is a sexy woman. But if I see a woman dressed like that grocery shopping or at a school PTA meeting, yeah, I'd think she was a hoochie mama. But, out at a party, no way! She's gorgeous!

I've been looking at 1950s fashion, that's how I thought about this question. I noticed that even in daily wear, like marketing or shopping, women wore tight clothes. Notice the pencil-skirt woman.

Yeppers! :thumbsup2
She's still gorgeous.

Today people dress so casually for everything. Back in the 40s-50s, women wore dresses and men wore slacks and a button up shirt to go to town on Saturdays. Today that outfit is sweatpants and pajama bottoms. We are used to seeing people in baggy clothing - that is the norm now. SL was more of the norm with her outfit for then (however, I can hardly use the word "normal" to describe her!).

It's fun to see the fashions in the old movies. Even the office workers dressed in sexier clothes but that was just the style. Then there were the hats and gloves and horrible pointy toe high heels.

I read older Nancy Drew books and I always wondered why Nancy wore dresses just about everywhere. She only wore pants to ride horses if I'm not mistaken.

I agree! The situation makes a huge difference. It's a shame everything is so casual now. I would like to dress up more.

Nobody has seen photos from the 1950s of tight pencil-skirted secretaries?

"we" still wear tight clothing...but it is because we're so much fatter these days so all our clothes are tight! Seriously, I adore clothing like you are speaking of.

It is why I watch old movies. I love the clothes, the hair and the makeup.

My MIL still only wears dresses. Every.single.day.

NO--People look down on women who look like they squeezed into something and are escaping something that is clearly too small. That won't look good on anyone.

SL is not a "hoochie" and she looks great. :confused3

You are comparing apples and oranges.

ETA: Example of escaping the clothes:

Sure I have. :) I like them. I have no problem with tight clothing if a woman has the figure for it. If someone is even 15 lbs overweight, then I think they look bad in it. Not necessarily a "hoochie momma" but I do think they do not look good or sexy or neat in tight clothing.

Just want to be clear that I don't think SL or women of the 1950s looked like hoochies. While looking at mid-century fashion, I realized that women were able to wear cleavage, skin-tight sweater and wiggle skirts without criticism.

I asked my DH and he says the difference between today's women and back then is that today the thing is to show skin, while back then women were covered while wearing the tight clothes.
