Disney World starting to scan fingerprint information

full image
A visitor to Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla., has her finger scanned for prints prior to entering the amusement park. (AP/Medill/News21, Karen Harmel) ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - Walt Disney World, which bills itself as one of the happiest and most magical places anywhere, also may be one of the most closely watched and secure. The country's most popular tourist attraction is beginning to scan your fingerprint information.

not entirely sure this info is correct from what I know WDW only scans the biometrics of your finger does not take a print.

I am researching and will get back to you on that.

here is a link to the pic in question:

http://uk.news.yahoo.com/30082006/4...et-machine-walt-disney-world-orlando-fla.html

that is indeed a biometric scanner....it does not take a fingerprint only a biometric scan of your fingers.

As far as VMK doing it....there is no possible way they could.

Well, they could put in a machine that you have to touch. You can decide which friends are allowed in ( you have asked them to touch it before so the machine regocnices (sorry for my English) you and your friends.
I saw this article on the homepage (www.mytelus.com) so check it out.

They do take your fingerprints and Disney has been critisized for it. I saw another article that explained that the fingerprints get erased from their systems after 30 days, but for those 30 days Disney has A LOT of information about each of its guests. This is, of course, just something I read in an article.

What????

Sorry LovesDisney but this time I am really going to disagree with you...Disney does NOT take a fingerprint.

Disney representatives said the technology does not store the entire fingerprint image and scanned information is purged in 30 days.

"We are not collecting fingerprints," Disney representative Kim Prunty said. "We are not collecting personal information. The sole purpose is to create a numerical value that links out guest with their Magic Your Way tickets."The system takes an image, it identifies points on that image and measures the distance between those points and immediately creates a numerical value on the blink of an eye," Prunty said. "And it's the numerical value that's stored in our system and recalled when a guest reenters our turn styles using their Magic Your Way tickets.".

A Disney representative said visitors who object to the finger scanners can use a photo ID instead. However, that option is not advertised at the theme parks.

Yes they do have some finger print scanners at WDW. They have been testing them at MK for a month or so, and last weekend I noticed them at MGM. It's a lot faster than the old biometric scanner. I always go to a print scanner when there's a line:)

Edit: I just read another article stating that they do use fingerprint scanners but Disney doesn't hold the information or use it in a bad way.

By the end of September, all of the geometry readers at Disney's four Lake Buena Vista theme parks will be replaced with machines that scan fingerprint information, according to industry experts familiar with the technology. The four parks attract tens of millions of visitors each year.

"It's essentially a technology upgrade," said Kim Prunty, Walt Disney World spokeswoman. The new scanner, like the old finger geometry scanner, "takes an image, identifies a series of points, measures the distance between those points, and turns it into a numerical value."

All of the MK scanners are now 1 finger. Was there yesterday and saw they have all been converted. As Roxane mentioned it makes entering the park much quicker!

I never said it was not a fingerprint scanner I said it did not take your fingerprint and store it as such.

It scans your fingerprint and stores the distance from say point a to point b which is different on everyone.

That is how they know you are the rightful ticket holder.

Do I think it is going too far and overboard...YES I do! but that was not the question.

I dont care.... if the "it doesnt take your finger print" finger print scanner gets us in faster... I am all for it.

True Bears. What bothers me is Disney is so protective of their ticket media.....does it really matter if Jane Doe purchased a 10 day ticket and only used 5 days then gave it to her sister/brother/friend etc to use. It was paid for admission to the park. Why should it matter who uses it as long as it was not stolen.

:confused3

They just had a recent article that explained how it worked, can't locate it right now but I agree with Mal it based On what I saw. It uses biometrics but doesn't actually fingerprint, just uses points to match. The article said if you wore a ring the first time and took it off you would not match if you read it again based on the vauge scan they do. But it said they were upgrading the scaners. I agree if it was paid for it should not matter, But they don't like people selling their tickets and they want to stop those. because if you buy a ticket second hand there is no way to tell if it is real or not used up when you buy it.

My thoughts on this....

If I buy a 10 MYW pass No Expire I am paying LESS per day to Walk into the parks than someone who buys a 5 day no expire MYW ticket.... So DIsney MAKEs more on the 5 day MYW pass than they do on the 10 day (this of course does not include shopping and eatting.. this is just ticket media) Therefore disney would rather selll TWO 5 day MYW passes than 1 Ten day MYW pass..... ( I am really sure Disney would like us all to buy 10 ONE day passes but I dont see that happening!!!)

I also think that Disney is trying to curb the resale of tickets. Since there is no way to check if days are left (other than going to guest services) I bet a lot of people have been scammed......

I hope it is true that they reset those scanners every 30 days or so, as we like treat friends with trips to WDW, and I bought the 10 day MYW passes with the hope of using them for a couple of different trips and a couple of different friends. (so far so good btW)

Will probably get slammed for this opinion....but I really do not see a problem with that at all.

It used to be if you bought a WDW ticket it did not matter who used it. I really think it should be that way.

Say your family consists of Mom, Dad and two kids. You buy 2 adult 10 day no expiry tickets and all go to WDW for 5 days planning on returning to WDW the following year. But things happen and Dad can not return again to WDW for another 2 years so mom wants to take the kids by herself...she uses her ticket the first year and wants to use her husbands ticket the next. I know since the finger scan is only kept for 30 days it should work and probably would but why should Mom feel like she is committing a crime by doing this.

They purchased the tickets and they should be able to use them as they see fit. JMHO

I agree with you, Mal. In fact, in the past we did just that. Dh's parents got a 5 day hopper pass and used 3 days. They passed off the passes to my BIL and SIL to use the remaining 2 days.

I've never been there, but this is what I've heard. The machine only records your finger liengthm width, etc. Not the print. This is used mostly on pass holders, so that if someone has stolen your pass, they won't be able to get in. They also match it to regular ticket holders so that multiple people cannot get in using the same ticket. Unfortunatly, I heard that the technology is a little spotty, and sometimes if the machine doesn't read your finger correctly, they will wave you in anyways. This leads to problems that the scanner tries to keep from happening, and it turns into a big cycle. Now, a while ago someone heard rumblings about a retina scanner, but I doubt that that will happen anytime soon. For now they just need to work all the bugs out of the finger scanners and it should be fine.

Personally, I love these new finger scans -- it makes getting into Disney MUCH faster!! And hasn't Disney always had the policy that you cannot trade tickets? This just helps them enforce it. I agree that you should be able to do what you want with your ticket, but if this helps me get into Disney faster, I'm all for it for now. :)

This is true. We've had passes since they first offered them and every year we have at least one that doesn't want to work right. Sometimes we will be sent to Guest Relations who will just give us new cards, but most of the time we are just let in.

I agree with Mal. If someone has bought the ticket, it should be their decision as to who uses it. It shouldn't necessarily have to be the person who purchased the ticket.
