Longstanding question: To refrigerate or not refrigerate?

I would, but that's just me;) I just think things last longer refrigerated.

Yes. My reason is nothing more than that's what my mom says to do!

There are types of pies I would not find necessary to refrigerate, like an apple pie. I think it has to do with the custard/egg/milk kind of mixture.

We love pumpkin pie.....and always refridgerate it.

Yep, anything with dairy in it should be kept below 40 degrees. Heard that on a Mayfield commercial.... :teeth:

Thanks for all the responses everyone! I always remember pumpkin pie being left out when I was growing up as a kid. Both my grandmother and father practiced this. As an adult, I always thought it a bit odd but was curious as to how the rest of the world (or Dis board) handles theirs!

Thanks again!

Ours is in the refrigerator with only one slice eaten on Christmas Eve (guess where the rest of it will go tomorrow?). But now that I think about it, they were sitting out on a table at the grocery store, not refrigerated. I think it tastes better cold, we put cool whip on it as the slices are cut. I can take it or leave it. My aunt made a great pumpkin roll, that I like better.

See, that's so true! I don't know why I didn't think of that too. I worked at Publix, a large grocery store here in the south, for several years. They don't refigerate the pies after they are baked.

So, the question remains unanswered!

i usually put it in the frig....but this year..I left it out, and no worries it was all gone by today...

No we don't, but currently it is out on the porch and it's pretty cold out there. During Thanksgiving though I always leave it on the counter and we never get sick.

My mom always left it out but if it was leftover...which it is hardly ever... then she might put that in the fridge  I don't refrigerate mine until it is leftover...I bake it and it sits out with the other pies until eaten and never refrigerated until leftover...WIERD! Now, I used to work in a bakery and pumpkin pies were NEVER refrigerated there. They were baked fresh and boxed and left out! So there! I guess it is still a mystery!

I think that in the grocery stores there is probably a time limit for how long they are left out. I know the health department doesn't allow pumpkin or pecan pies to be left at room temperature when I've been involved in soup kitchens, but I see them on counters at the grocery store.

I dont mine, but they are always gone by the next day but if I have it longer than that it goes into the fridge. Im sure there is a limit to how long they can be left out in the store. I have always wondered about this myself as I leave it on the counter overnight... .

Well, the pie is gone! I guess the longstanding question will remain longstanding! Thanks again for all of the replies.

Oh, just out of curiosity, I called Publix. The pies are kept un-refrigerated until their expiration date is up and then they are tossed.

Next time you are in a grocery store, check the ingredients. They may use powdered milk as an ingredient instead of milk/cream. That would explain why they don't have to refrigerate.
