Longest you've taken your child out of middle school/jr. high?

We will take the 3 ds out of school for 4-5 days in december. They go to a private school, but its very academic, so I know they will have a lot of work to make up. I just hope that ahead of time they can get the work they need, I dont feel so great about it, but dh has a conference and the room is free and we have ap's so it will be great to go for next to nothing. They will be 8th, 10th and 12th grade.

We just returned from a two week trip. Our kids ended up missing 14 school days as we drove down from northern Ontario. My daughter's teacher gave her work to do before she left (math) and she also took a novel to read and report on and wrote a speech and a 1000 word essay. She is in grade 7. The only problem I had was that her teacher wanted to come too!! She is a good student and doing her work kept her occupied in the car for the 3 days down and the 3 days back. My son is in grade 3. His teacher rearranged his grade 3 standard provincial test so that he would be done before we left. He had no work to make up for the time that we are gone. He is also a good student.

We usually go the last two weeks of school, because my husband can not get any time off in July and August, so that is the only time that we can go on vacation as a family. This year, we had to go a little earlier to use our annual passes.

I wouldn't normally take them for this amount of time, but this may be our last family vacation as I just got my teacher's degree and when I work full time, I will not be able to pull them out of school, because I will not be able to take the time off. Our school is only out for July and Aug, and my husband can not get time off in July or Aug due to seniority, so we went this year.

The memories that we make will last far longer than a lower grade if they do not get credit for the work they make up.

Thought I'd pop in and give you an opinion of an actual student haha. I graduated high school a week ago today actually. :)

Anyway, my parents took me out of school for at least one week every year from sixth grade on and I never once had a problem. I was a good student and I always made up my work either before we left or after we returned. My school/teachers never had any complaints about my going and the days were never counted as unexcused absences. My school has a form that parents fill out when going on vacation explaining the vacation and number of days the child will miss. As long as that is filled out and handed in so that the school is aware of what is going on, vacation time is never a problem.

That being said, as long as your child can keep up with the work, I would take the vacation. While school is important, family time is as well and you don't know how many more chances you'll get to take a trip like this. Kids only stay kids for so long and if you let these opportunities pass you by, you never know how much you may regret it. Travelling is also just as important. Seeing other parts of the world and learning about other people/cultures is just as important and beneficial as sitting in a classroom.

I hope I was maybe a little bit of help. :)

We had always vacationed in early Dec and this past Dec we took the boys (7th & 9th graders) for 6 school days. My high schoolers teachers were great, he took all his finals before he left. My 7th grader's principle was less than cooperative. It all worked out in the end but we won't be doing it again until they are both in high school. Keep in mind my 7th grader is in beta club so his academic status was not a concern to the principle.

My advice talk to your school's administration not the teachers- all of my sons teachers were willing to let him take all exams before he left. But not the principle. He was just a royal pain!!!
