Longer ressies & hope for codes

Do many people deliberately make longer reservations and then hope for codes?
I mean, if codes do not come out, do most people reduce their number of days or change resorts?
When is the last time that no room only codes were offered for the summer?

I guess I decide how long my vacation is going to be and then reserve a room in the category I could pay for without a code. Then if a code comes out I try to move up (like from a moderate to a deluxe). I generally don't change the length of the vacation though - that is fixed from the start.

I have a week long ressie at POFQ now but will try to move up to a deluxe if some good codes come out!
