Long Solo Trip?

We may have had a bit of an epiphany this morning, and realised that we can combine two things that my DH and I really want to do next year in one trip. He's wanted to learn to fly for ages, and it's much cheaper in the US than the UK. We've found a good looking course at a decent flight school, which is about a 25 minute drive from our preferred Disney resort... They reckon it's possible to learn in 3 weeks, and as we were already thinking about a 2 week trip to Orlando (primarily WDW), we're wondering about combining the two: staying at WDW, so I don't have to drive, and he can take the hire car down to the flight school each day.

It would basically mean I could end up with three weeks touring the park on my own... which sounds amazing mostly (though I would miss my DH!)- and I was wondering if anyone else had done a long solo trip to WDW and how they found it? Any tips, tricks or suggestions? :)

WOW, 3 weeks? And I am freaking out about 9 days. :) Will he be back at the hotel in the evenings?

If we go ahead with it, yes, he'll be back at the hotel in the evenings. We'll make sure he has park tickets, and he can pop over for evenings if he wants to :)

if you are staying in a DVC resort then yes - a regular room for 3 weeks - that is a long time in a hotel room.

dvc resorts - OKW, SSR, VWL, BWV, BCV, AKV, BLT, GFV, PV

go for at least a 1-bedroom - and probably OKW if you rent from a DVC member it is cheaper than SSR or AKV (mostly)

We love SSR, so that is our first choice resort. The past few years, Disney have offered 40% off room rates plus free dining to British guests :)

With your husband being back with you in the evenings and being in a villa, I think it is totally doable. If he were staying in one place and you in another, that would be hard (at least for me). You will not be alone in the evenings and you will have some amenities in your room so it wont be like you are staying at a value with nothing in your room.

It's one of the reasons we like SSR. Could easily spend the day there in the pool or pop over to DTD for a couple of hours and be totally happy with it :)

If you're the type who can stay entertained by yourself, I'd say go for it! Three weeks means time to take it easy and explore all the stuff you'd normally miss, like dining and shows at the resorts. Knowing you have tons of time to come back takes the pressure off in the parks, too; gives you time to stop and appreciate all the little things people rush by in order to reach the next ride.

Without a doubt, i'd be ELATED at the idea! Thats 3 weeks of pure bliss! you do what you want during the day, you have DTD at your door...plus DH will be with you in the evenings. I think its a wonderful idea! Can I come? :teeth:

For me the more time I can spend enjoying Disney the better. I always travelled alone and have done a couple of month long combined Disney trips (parks and cruises) and absolutely love it. I would go longer if I had more vacation days. The longest I have spent at WDW was two weeks. My time was split between visiting the parks, checking out the various resorts, taking tours, relaxing by the pool, borrowed a bicycle to ride around the property and of course a little shopping at DTD. To save on $ I had ordered groceries to be delivered to my villa so I didn't eat out everyday. I also invested in purchasing Tables In Wonderland to save on when I did dine out. I didn't need a rental car so using Disney transportation saved me $ as well. Enjoy your vacation.

Since you are coming from the UK and you wont be completely alone you should do it.

That right there is the very reason it is doable. You will have some company and you will not be alone at night.

This is exactly what I was thinking. A value would be horrible for this but a villa would be fine.

OP, I am sorry for taking over your thread. I have never gone to Disney alone and I know I could not go without my kids, but this sounds like a win for you and your husband. I would not pass it up.

Longest solo trip I've done was 8 days and that was more than enough time

I had 10 days total (incl 3 days at Universal) last September and it wasn't enough for me. So many things I didn't manage to get to! 3 weeks will be great with time for days off or having a spa day or resort hopping. Plus with your hubby being around in the evenings you get the best of both worlds

I'm sure many of us are very jealous right now!

I have done two weeks solo and absolutely loved it. I stayed at Wyndham Bonnet Creek and cooked some meals and just had a gret time.
