Long shot: Does anyone know how to fix a "pull-string" toy? Like talking Woody, etc..

My dd has a good quality Talking Woody doll that she L.O.V.E.S. The pull string quit working a while ago, and now just hangs "full pull" length down his back...

I was wondering if anyone knew of a way to access the coil area and "re-coil" it to fix it.

I just put new batteries in it, so it DOES still speak using his shirt buttons, but it would be nice to have the pullstring working again too, kwim? Putting batteries in was a bit of an adventure as well, as the factory ones were obviously placed in it before they dressed him in his non-removeable clothes!

I didn't SEE an access for the pull-string compartment, but that doesn't mean it isn't somewhere else as awkwardly placed as the battery compartment, kwim?

You might be able to find a seam that you can cut to get inside and see where the problem is. then all you need to do it resew

I bought it second-hand at an awesome high-quality resale shop....the owner told me then it was one of the most valuable ones available. Having seen dozens of others, I'd have to say he was right...everything on ours is a really good quality. Solid buttons, hard boots, hard hat, plastic belt with light-up buckle...

His arms and legs are soft, otherwise he has a solid, hard-plastic padded torso...you have to un-screw the battery compartment lid to replace the 2 AA batteries, and the pull-string goes into the plastic torso through a hole...

Searched google for a fix myself and couldnt find any, although it did bring this up... This is what i did to mine... May help google searchers

Bought one with the battery compartment ripped out and the board had a rip out of it so pretty useless ..

So on a carboot i saw a small backpack in a toy box. It was woodys and it spoke, YEE HAAA. Only problem it was a button activated and was powered by watch batteries.. So i had to do abit of modding.. Im sure my son would have more fun with a talking woody than a talking bag so off i went..


First was to redo the battery. Change the board to take AA. Old speaker and board is to the left and also the bag that is being sacrificed.

Next was to attack the touch sensor..

I drilled holes either side of the original solder layout. That way i could get a proper fixing by threading through both holes, tying together tight so it wasnt loose.. Then i soldered...

test.... It works.. Yeehaaaa cowboy

Now the board size is a problem.. As you can see from the original its alot bigger!!

All cut to size.. Had to redo one of the wires as original was too short

Siliconed the board down so it wouldnt be loose. Abit of tape sitting ontop of the silicon to hold the speaker up.

Excuse the dirty nails, lol.. Im working on my car at the moment and its a nightmare to keep them clean, lol....

And now my son has a talking woody... He has a few phrases which differ to standard ones.. he loves it... Took a while as its fiddly, but was well worth the faff...
