Hi! I don't post on here too much, and no one knows who I am so I'm sure no one cares, but I just had to let off some steam and let people know to be careful about this kind of thing...

Last Friday I went to make an online payment to Disney of $650.00 on my $2400 vacation (my first payment so far). In the fields I entered everything correct. I specifically remember seeing next to the amount box "Partial payments must be more than $20" and I entered $650.00. I also double checked this, so I know the full amount was NOT in this box. After I entered all my CC info (which was my debit to our checking account), I pressed submit, but it took me to a page simply saying "Thank you for confirming your reservation," no receipt, no confirmation number, no email...nothing. That seemed a bit strange to me, so I checked our checking account and what do you know? The entire amount was taken out of our checking. Now DH and I make OK money but we don't just have $2400 to spare or else we would have paid in full already. Thank goodness we had just got paid though and that money was in our account, but our account was drained leaving pretty much no money to pay bills!

After I recovered from the heart attack I just had, I called reservations and asked them to please refund the money, and explained to them what happened. I know there is no reason for them to believe that I didn't do something wrong when making the payment since I have no proof of what I did, so it makes sense for them to be thinking "well, it's this woman's own fault. she doesn't know how to use the internet I guess." Pretty much everything I buy that is not groceries I buy online and I pay all my bills online, so I do actually know what I'm doing when it comes to that, but I digress...

They apparently refunded the money but it can take up to 7-10 business days to show back up in our account. It's been 5 business days now and still no money. :( We had to take what little we had in savings and borrow some money from my parents just to pay our bills on time, and have been putting everything else on the CC until the money shows back up, so we SHOULD be OK for another week. It's just really nerve-racking because the account is so low...it's never usually cutting it close like this.

I called today just to make sure everything was on track with the refund, like that accounting had processed it and all. I mean it is kind of a big deal, so I just wanted to make sure. The lady I talked to today was in Reservations, and she acted like I was the biggest idiot for calling to check on this. First of all she told me there was no refund. I didn't get a conformation number last Friday and I called twice to make sure that I wasn't supposed to get some kind of confirmation. I was assured all this was on my file. I guess the lady today didn't read my file before she told me there was no refund, but then she said she saw it on there. I told her I was just checking to make sure they had processed it on their end because we are really needing that money back. She said they had (honestly, I'm still not convinced she knew for certain that it had been) but it takes up to 10 business days, acting like I had no business calling about it. I was like, I KNOW that, but it's just we NEED this money so I need to make sure everything is on track for it to be re-deposited into our checking. She also kept saying our "credit card" so I told her you know this wasn't a credit card, it was the debit for our checking account. She was quite rude and I tried my best not to be rude back but it was just a bit nerve-racking.

I mean, is it crazy of me to want to make sure this money is at least in transit and not paperwork sitting on someone's desk or email? I wasn't being accusatory when I called today, I said exactly this "We had a refund last Friday and I was just calling to make sure that had gone through." I never received an email or receipt for the refund transaction so I just wanted to make sure...

I'm trying not to let this ruin the magic, but it's been a really stressful week.

Anyway, guess who's going to be making payments over the phone from now on?!

Perfect example of why you shouldn't use debit cards to pay for any major purchases.

That sucks :( I hope you can get the refund quickly without much hassle...

My only reasoning as to how it happened, is that perhaps while you did enter 650.00 in the box, you never click on the button/circle/square beside it that said "pay partial amount" and it automatically stayed on the option "pay full amount". (Hope that makes sense). Most web sites automatically switch the option once you enter a number, but it's possible Disney doesn't

Sorry to hear that.

My bank accidently paid my mortgage 3 times one month!!!!! Yikes! So I know exactly how you feel.

Maggie

You had every right to call and ask, that is a LOT of money to be out when not expecting it.

And she had no right to be rude, if you got her name report her. She should have been sympathetic at the very least.

Hopefully it will show up in your checking acct sooner than later.

I feel for you :grouphug:

I've read so many horror stories on here about Disney's online payment system that I will never use it. I'll just keep the money in my savings account until payment is due, then pay in full.

I don't really understand why people make partial payments on their Disney package anyway, as there's no real incentive to do so. If there was a discount for paying in advance I could see the reasoning, but it's actually the opposite - if I hold the money in my savings account until the due date, it's earning interest for as much time as possible; if I fork it over to Disney in advance it's no longer earning interest for me.

That stinks - did you have her name? I would send Disney a letter and let them know how stressful this has been and that you did not appreciate how you were treated on the phone today.

As much as I hate to say this - it is a perfect example of why you should never pay for things over the internet with a debit card. I figure if a mistake is made it will be on my CC and not bank account then! Also - as far as making payments over the phone - a rep could just as easily made the same mistake. I would use your credit card for payments now - and use your cc and not debit card at the resorts for your room charge b/c they will put a hold on your card.

Yeah I was thinking that might be what happened. I tried to go back to the "make a payment" page, but there's no option since it's Paid in Full as of now. The thing I don't get is why it never gave me a receipt page with a confirmation number.

Also, I definitely learned my lesson in using the debit card. I guess I was just looking at it as another bill to pay you know, never thinking that would happen! DH was like, just use your CC from now on and pay it back...so that's what I'll be doing! :)

I guess I wanted to make a partial payment so that I can't touch that money and it's going toward what it was originally intended. However, I will probably just save the rest and make the final payment all together when it's due...

AND I didn't get the girl's name. I just really feel weird complaining about someone to their supervisor unless they were to REALLY treat me horribly, which has never happened fortunately. I know I am weird for that...

This happened to a friend of mine, same exact thing. Seems the payment system is not that great online for some reason. Another mentioned that it takes a couple of days for the payments to show up too when paying online. Sorry it happened.

Thanks for the sympathetic well wishes everyone! I was just trying to get some GRRRRRRRR out online

I agree it is better to use a credit card because when there is a problem it is much easier to resolve. Also, if you use a Disney credit card and pay $2400.00 for your vacation you can get 6 free Dole Whips!

This happened to me several months ago - in fact, the payment overdrew my account! I called Disney and the CM in guest services arranged a 3 way call with my bank. I had my money back within 2 hours! I guess I was very lucky!

OP: two things, well, three really. First, based on momplus3's experience, you should call back and speak with someone else. Get a supervisor or manager involved if necessary, or Guest Services. Your question is ENTIRELY reasonable, and today's CM doesn't seem to have alleviated your concerns.
Second, it's too bad this happened to you. I do see at least one person recommends not using a debit card to pay online, but some of us don't have credit cards. Interestingly, just yesterday when I made a package reservation and asked about calling periodically to make payments, the CM said I could do it online as well. Which brings me to...
Finally, your experience has alerted me to either not do that at all, or to use a debit card connected to an account with sufficient 'fun' funds.

Next time you have an issue with the agent, ask for Guest Services. They can pull up more information on your account than the agents answering the phone calls. They are usually much nicer as well.

Some of us don't have debit cards for the very reason OP got hosed. Even if it's a reputable company like Disney once you click the money is gone and you've seen how hard it is to get it back. Now imagine what it would be like if they didn't want to cooperate  Why do you think so many businesses love them? Even if you have a legitimate excuse for a refund they can earn interest while it's being disputed.

Out of all the financial tools at my disposal a debit card is the last one I'd use. And if this problem wasn't bad enough, consumer guru Clark Howard (who absolutely loathes debit cards) reported on another scam that is especially dangerous to debit card holders:

Exactly! Purseval, I love Clark and so agree with him about so many things.

I'm glad you will use your credit card next time.

I am surprised it is taking that long to get your refund! Our past trip in April we switched from a room only to a package and so our initial one night room deposit was refunded to us and I was very surprised 2 days later when I was doing some online banking and saw that it had been refunded so quickly. I wonder if it has anything to do with the bank that someone is using. We actually set up a separate account with our bank called the “vacation account “and that is where we put money for our vacations and the account we use when paying. It is only for vacations and it really has worked out well for us and makes things so much easier and less stressful if something like this happened.

I have had to over the past two years have Disney refund me now 3 times. For various things, package changes and cancellations. Twice I had the money back within 3 days, the third time it took closer to 10. I have had the same bank the whole time. I did call the 3rd time since it took so long and it took Disney 5 days to refund the money that time themselves (I called because I thought something was wrong) I guess if they are busier they can take longer to process the return themselves, I have learned they send it back to Visa or whatever CC company's name is on your card and then that company sends it back to your bank, then your bank refunds it back to you.

OP I hope you get your money back soon. I have read your situation on here more than once which has converted me to making payments by phone only now. I too like to pay for things as I have the money in hand I don't know why, I know it makes sense just to keep it in savings and pay in full but in my head I feel better making payments.

I'm really sorry this happened to you. I think you have a very legitimate concern. My experience with the reservations employees is that sometimes they simply don't know the answer to your questions. I second the advice of calling back and insisting (politely) on speaking with a supervisor.

After making some changes I had a credit on my account. I told them to leave it on there as it would be silly to get it back and have to take it to the bank only to bring it back with me. I asked very specific questions and got very specific answers about whether this was possible. I was assured it was.

Nope. They mailed it back. It took more than 3 weeks and the one time I called I was told that they had no way of knowing how long it would take:rolleyes1

It was nowhere near the amount you are currently out, but what struck me was that I got no inofrmation or misinformation from everyone I spoke to. Call and get a supervisor and ask for names when talking so someone at least feels accountable for the information they are giving you.

I am so sorry that happened. Thank you for sharing. We use our DC for things like this as well and I will be sure to remember this versus paying online. I hope it works it self out quickly!
