Long Non-Athletic Shorts?

This is more of an apparel question than a budget question, but figured people on this board might have some suggestions.

I am a 6'3" male and have been looking for a couple of years for some shorts (non-athletic) that are long (go down past the knee) and are not cargo shorts. Does anyone have any suggestions? I feel like I have combed the internet and our local stores and cannot find any that I am excited about purchasing/wearing.

Almost all shorts I find online have models wearing them and the shorts stop above or right at the top of the knee. Cargo shorts seem to be longer, but I don't want them.

The easiest solution that occurs to me it that you could buy a pair of pants and hem them where you want the shorts to stop. You can use hemming tape and an iron, so no needle involved unless you just want to hem the pants. Alternately, take the pants to a seamstress or tailor and get them cut and hemmed there.

You might try searching by inseam length or the terms capris for men or knickers. Long pants cannot usually simply be hemmed to be shorts; they need to be tapered as well. I did see an older gentleman earlier today who had shorts which went past his knees, but from where I was sitting he appeared to be someone under six feet tall wearing shorts which were too long for him. Most men look best with shorts which fall at or just above the knee. Where your hem falls can look awkward if it's not the right place for you. Ask the opinion of someone you trust what looks best on you.

My husband is 6'4" and doesn't seem to have a problem finding shorts that fit him - and he, too, does not like his shorts short. I just browsed through them and they're from Target, Kohls and American Eagle. Some were cargo, some were not.

try Dickies ... I just saw some on a dude today .. definitely past the knee.

It's a trend .. that has been around for some time.

Uniqlo seems to favor relatively long shorts, and they're cheap. REI has this unusual item, with a 16" inseam and which I don't think have cargo pockets, though they're still intended for outdoor activity. Land's End has some 11" inseam shorts.

But there isn't that much that goes below the knee, as that's really a fading fashion from the last decade, beyond the streetwear and perhaps rap community (not that it was ever common). Men's shorts have been getting shorter the last few years. Many people seem to think there's an absolute right length, but it really depends on which decade you grew up in, as well as your own proportions.

If one must, a tailor could both hem and if necessary taper a pair of chinos. But it shouldn't be that hard to find chinos with the right diameter at the knee, particularly since skinny is in.

My husband is about your height...you might have better luck looking in one of the big/tall men's shops rather than a 'regular' clothing store. Shorts designed for extra tall might be longer.

OP, do you know what length inseam you want? I found these with a 13 inch inseam:
http://www.kohls.com/product/prd-24...r-vintage-stretch-shorts.jsp?color=Dark_Taupe That's the longest I could find.

I had a terrible time finding shorts for my DS this spring. He also wanted longer non-cargo shorts. He is not nearly as tall as you and we still had a horrible time. So much of the issues were with quality control. I would have to order a few shorts of each size/style because every single pair was cut and sewn differently (the same exact shorts).

Good luck with your search!

Old Navy has a tall section online and has shorts that are not cargo shorts but their shorts tend to be "skinnier" legs when no cargo.
Today Old Navy has 50% off their shorts online also so cheaper to try out. My husband is 6'1 and this is his go to for shorts or Kohl's when he wants
"golf shorts" which is what he calls non cargo shorts.

My husband is 6'4 and although he does prefer cargo shorts, he has some longer ones from Old Navy. They are called "belted broken in khakis".

You are going to have better luck with that style if you shop at a place that specializes in "urban" clothing, but as a PP noted, so-called "man-pris" were a very short-lived style (and one that, quite honestly, was considered very unflattering when it was in style.)

However, men's shorts, like trousers, are described by the inseam. The trick to finding what you want is to measure your inseam and decide what length you want the shorts to be. Then Google it with this structure: mens shorts 16" shipping

That should find you an online source for what you want if such a thing exists.

I second the Dickies suggestion! When we traveled before, one of the guys in our group had the same "no cargo shorts" stipulation and we found Dickies as the best option.

Are shorts that go nearly to your ankle really shorts?
I remember a dozen or so years ago reading that shorts that go below the knee are properly called knee pants, but that's before the Internet was reliable. Now I believe the proper term is knickers. Unless they reach to a couple of inches above the ankle, in which case they're waders or clam diggers.
