Logo ideas

Azalia bushes, funeral home fans, huge live oak trees, shelling peas, fresh turned cotton fields, my grandmother, watermelon, magnolias, gravel roads, Sunday dinner....

(Oh, and it excluded a lot of white people, too, for those keeping track. Most whites in the South did not own slaves and did not live on big fancy plantations.)

My family is from the south and there were was muchmore of the following than the plantation thing...although I always did wish I was Scarlett!

Small time farmers working with their families to raise food to eat and items to sell for cash...things like tobacco and corn.

Porches and calling out to everyone who passed.

Sitting on those same porches and "making music"...old time gospel with lots of guitars and harmonies.

Baptisms in the river.

All night singings and dinner on the ground.

Moonshine:woohoo:

Thanks... I'm not even going there or acknowledging that response... simply putting that poster on ignore and calling it a day... I specifically mentioned that I wasn't going into any of the rebel flag type, racial stuff. I thought it was common sense that I didn't want anything like that... I'm creating a logo for business and its highly unlikely that I'm going to use negative pieces of history... Yes let me put a picture of sweet tea, a tree with spanish moss and magnolia....and a rebel flag-sounds great...ugh. I'm glad my old southern traditonal business logo won't likely gain that person as a client because I am sure they'd just be a doll to work with....

You know, you asked a question. No need to get your knickers in a twist. When someone asks me what I think of when I hear the term "Old South," I'm with that poster. I think racism, Scarlett O'Hara, and Jim Crowe laws. Saying, "Tell me what you think when you hear Old South but don't talk about any of the bad stuff" is a bit naive. And a new business owner might want to think about how their business plan could alienate potential new customers.

Plus, honestly when I think of 'Old South' the first thing that springs to mind is the movie 'Mississippi Burning'.

P.S. I live in Mississippi

I didn't know that it was common sense to ask a question and exclude certain opinions and races.

You are putting me on ignore because I told you what images the Old South conjures up for me? Nice.

Good luck with your logo. I see it is geared towards only a certain demographic. You should have put that in your original post.

I'm from NY, and my immediate image of 'old south' was 'gone w/ the wind', plantations, slavery, etc. But I'm not from the south, so I only have media images to go by.

What will be your type of business? Who are you trying to draw in (locals who will appreciate the old south feel you're trying to project? tourists?) Is it a store front and you're doing a business sign? A little more info would be helpful.

Someone in a big fancy dress, holding an umbrella outside their mansion with slaves around them. Thats what old south says to me...

Obviously the OP is looking for what she is looking for - the happy, rolling in the hay, life is wonderful aspects of the south, and thats it. Personally, I think your right, but your not going to get anywhere here. And in all truth, shes (he?) is looking for a logo that sells - not knowing what shes selling, I truely doubt slavery and cross burning is going to help her marketing speal.

If I were going to start a business selling Black Forest Cake I wouldn't slap a swastika on my logo. That doesn't mean I'm pretending the holocaust didn't happen.

Honestly, do people really not see the difference between talking about history and conjuring up images that would sell a product or a service?

Magnolias were the first thing that popped into my head as well.

Rolling in the hay, eh?

That might help sell some cack. :rolleyes1

Magnolia trees, Crepe Myrtle bushes and Mimosa trees (the best climbing trees for little kids). Sunday dinner at Grandmothers with all of the cousins, aunts and uncles. The best food ever.

If you really want to get technical... Hitler stole the swastika symbol from the Hindu religion - so if you were selling your Black Forest Cakes in India, it WOULD be a good marketing tool. ;)

I think what upset some people, was that the OP stated that they would be blocking the person. As much as their opinion may have been "off" for the marketing subject, its still what comes to their mind when talking about the old south. They didn't say it in a nasty way, its just the thoughts they get. Personally, its what comes to my mind too. I wrote it before I read anyone elses post. There were 2 paths the OP could have taken -
#1 - I'm sorry your family had to go through a time like that
or
#2 - Thats not what I want to hear - I'm blocking you.

It's funny you say that, because I think it's such an interesting symbol from an aesthetic point of view. My boss is Indian... I wonder if he'd like my cake. LOL.

I just assumed there was other history there that prompted the blocking.

Are you from the south? The reason I ask is that most people of ALL races that actually LIVE here know that there is so much more to the south than the images you are choosing to conjure.

If someone is trying to come up with a logo do you really think they need your negativity? Really?

The racisim you speak of was all over the country not just the south. It was a sign of the times not a sign of the region.

I am sorry you hate the region of the country that I love so much. I can't change history even if I wish I could wipe that particular part of American history away. Seems to me we should learn from it and YOU need to stop hating the south in the same way that your grandparents were hated long ago.

I also hope that most of you realise that the "Scarlett O'Hara" type of living was not the majority. There were not as many rich, slave owners as people choose to believe. That was ONE PART of the south's history, not all of it. There is soo much more to the history of the south than that.

OP, we have an area of time that is long after the civil war but still very old houses. Those houses are what I think of when you say "old south".

Big, shaded porches, with porch swings and rockers, azealas and dogwood blooming (seen more in this part of the south than magnolias and absolutely beautiful when blooming together). Family and friends gathering on the porches on Sunday afternoon with tall glasses of ice tea. Talking, laughing and playing with the children.

Big BBQ's with family and friends all gathering. Picnic tables outside. Games of horseshoes and softball.

When does "Old South" end and "New South" begin?

All of you whose images of the South are negative----Is that how you still perceive us?

Am I a "terrible, awful" person because I am white and from the South?

To the OP: My images of the South are not cliche (hoop skirts, etc.). To me, the South is summed up be lying underneath my favorite live oak tree covered in moss on my college campus, sitting outside shucking corn and snapping beans with my Grandmother and sitting in my other Grandmother's porch swing drinking sweet tea.

Yes I am.

.

Please don’t speak for me or my grandparents. I guess we are not included in that “most”. And the fact that you use the words "choosing to conjure" shows me you know nothing about what my grandparents went through.

Where did I say I hate The South? I was asked what “What kind of images come to mind when I ask to think about the old south?” I answered the question truthfully. And yes, my grandparents were hated. My grandfather especially told humiliating stories that I will NEVER forget. We are talking about The South of yesteryear. It was not a nice time for some:guilty:

We were asked to give our images on Old South. Not today, but OLD South. Sorry some of us let you down with how we feel.

Am I a "terrible, awful" person because I am white and from the South?

Again, we are talking about Old South. Not about white people in the South in 2011. I am sure you are a very nice person. Nobody said implied that you are a "terrible, awful" person because you are white and from the South. Old South, people. That was the question. And only certain opinions are welcome, apparently.

OP-Will this item be marketed to all demographics? You will have to think your Old South tactic if that is the case.

Well I guess I'm just a racist little business owner now aren't I?

The reason I blocked the other poster is because this is the internet, I know you are going to have people who want to do nothing but wine and drag negative stuff into it, had she presented it in a way like other posters did where they said it honestly reminded them of that era, fine, whatever but it was this diatribe about her/his family and just drama drama drama and I figured she/he would be one of those posters who wanted to come back and forth and fight everyone who said anything to differ with her. It's the internet, I can't tell the emotion behind what she typed but frankly I don't care because I already specifically said I wasn't looking for those negative images. Now when I open my thread I can simply scroll right passed her threads without wasting time reading them, along with other people who might have replied that I've added to the ignore list-it's there for a reason so I use it.

As for marketing something racists, should I run right over to epcot right this minute and demand they rip out the world showcase? I mean they are marketing that and there are some pretty negative issues there-germany had the holocaust, japan bombed us, we bombed japan...Geez I mean I guess disney only wants blonde hair blue eyed bomb tossing patrons in epcot... I didn't get the memo and I was there just yesterday.

Thanks to everyone who understood what I where I was going and gave some good feedback, it seems like the idea's I have are the same as a lot of people's, especially the magnolia flower!
