Logistics of returning car to Avis before boarding

Hello!

We are doing two one-way rentals with Avis before & after our cruise on the Magic. (Only one more Eastern itinerary before us! Yippee!) We have found great rates with Avis and this will make it easy to get Lactaid milk for DS and soda for us before the cruise.... and to be able to go to something fun at WDW (character lunch or DTD) for our return day, when we have an early evening flight.

So, here's the question. Can I check our checked bags at the port before returning the car? It would make life much easier. Also, how is the Avis shuttle to the port? Does it run frequently? Now that we are hearing about 11:50 a.m. board times, we'd love to arrive at the port about 11:30.

Thanks for your thoughts! I am so excited!

Adrienne,

I would suggest that you print the map that Dave has on his site, www.dcltribute.com. We didn't and DH made a wrong turn. It took him more than 1.25 hours to return. We had all checked in, checked on price of an upgrade, took pictures at port, watched cartoons with Donald Duck, etc. I was beginning to get worried. DS9 was really worried.

You can go to the port and drop off passengers and luggage and then one person can return the car while the rest of you wait in line. Of course, since it took DH so long, he also had to go to the line to get his KTTW card, since we were already done.

Otherwise he said it was very quick and painless to return the car and the shuttle was very quick once he got there.

Have a great time!

On our 11/8 cruise, we went to Avis, dropped the car, put the luggage on the bus & got to the Port around 10:15 AM- about 10 min. start to finish... Because it was before 10:30, the Avis bus ( or cars) couldn't drop off curbside in front of the terminal. They let us off in a tented area across the street in the parking area. A porter was there collecting luggage, so we didn't have to schlep it anywhere. We just walked across the street into the terminal. Either way is easy!

Check in is pretty quick & if you go at 11:30AM, most of the early crowd will be online, but you may be in the thick of it with the buses coming in....

Check with DCL about dropping off luggage curbside & returning to the terminal. When we traveled there was no orange alert up, so it may have changed. Perhaps a recent cruiser could shed some light on the procedures in place right now.

I used Avis and it worked out fine.

My family was staying in WDW the morning of our cruise. We had a character breakfast and then proceeded to drive our rental car to the rental center 3 miles from Port Canaveral.

When we pulled into the rental center there was a van loading passengers and one right behind it. I dropped my keys at the counter and we were on our way to the port as fast as we could unload our car.

If you leave early enough I don't see a good reason to go to the port first to dropoff and then to the rental center.

Have fun,

Jeff
