My DS is 18 and is a speical needs little guy. Well, a 6 foot tall "little" special needs guy ;) David is a Houdidi and he likes to escape out the front door. We have an alarm on every door and window in the house. When you open the front or back door a little chime rings so we know it has been opened. The yard is fences in so he can't get out We had baby safety covers on the door knobs but he can open these. Well his new thing is he needs to wiggle every doorknob in the house..front door, back door, door to garage, 2 closet doors, door to study and then start again. He has pulled the front door handle off 3 times because it just wears out. Ok we bought a new doorknob heavy duty brass so maybe it will last longer than 3 months. Darn thing has an anti locking feature on it so when he wiggles the knob it opens up!! This is becoming a problem. He has pulled off the chain on the chain part of the upper lock, he has wiggled the dead bolt front handle off. Any great ideas??? We have had handles insetead of knobs and he breaks them off also. We cant have the deadbolt on all the time because then my other 2 children cannot open the door to go out, they can't reach the lock so it is a huge fire safety issue.....anyone have any great ideas??? Anyone found a really nice, heavy duty, sturdy doorknob. The people at Lowes sold us this one...the one that does not work. The one with the anti-lock feature so it opens when he wiggles. If he does get it open he goes out and although he will be safe there is a glass storm door that he will bang on......anyone....

Well, maybe this is a long shot, can you call a respite house and ask them what they use to keep the clients safe? It's probably a door chime and dead bolt, but it's worth a call?!

Does anyone make a lock box that can cover the door knob to the front door, maybe you can have a punch lock to open it, then David can't wiggle the door knob but the other kids can punch the code in and get out?

Also, my cousin is 28 years old, mobile but has the mentality of a 2 year old, she is a great escape artist too! My Aunt had a door installed that had two dead bolts- one at the regular place and one lower because Kathy would get the door handle unlocked and yank, kick, and pull until she damaged the door. Maybe you could just leave the bottom lock locked at all times so your younger kids could get the door open if needed.

Last year she wanted out so badly that she hit the glass panes and had to have stitches.:sad2: She just doesn't understand the trouble waiting out there for her.

She was with a sitter for the first time at night, the sitter didn't follow the directions given to her and Kathy was brought home by the police after they found her wondering on a Hwy exit ramp. Yes, DFACS got involved all because the adult sitter who was told that this would be an all night awake kind of situation, decided that she knew better.

I hope you can find the right solution for your family.

I forgot to tell you how the police knew where she lived-

My Aunt had a medic alert type of bracelet made with their address and the word Autistic, she has Autism among other disabilities, and loves shiny jewelery, she's not hyper-sensitive, and she has been wearing the same kind of bracelet since she was a toddler, she actually gets upset if we have to remove it. She wears it every day, even when she sleeps and baths. Thank God!

i like that one its a dead bolt that opens with a finger print u can setup everyone in the house but him

if not browse that site there are lots of biometric or push number locks that may work and tuff ones that will hold up

if u had the finger print dead bolt were all can reach it you could leave a door knob with no lock he could twist all he wanted and it would just spin but a touch of the other lock from someone else unlocks the dead bolt and there you go there is also a back up key
