Lockers at the Water Parks - Where to Pay?

We plan on renting a locker for our upcoming day at Typhoon Lagoon. Our plan is to rope drop and head for the huts close to Typhoon Tilly's to get a shady spot then go over to the lockers in that back area. I've heard that the lockers are now all electronic and you just pick a code and pay with a credit card at a nearby kiosk. However I just watched a video where somebody said that you must rent your locker (even if it's in the back area) at Singapore Sal's when you first walk in. The last thing I want to do is have to backtrack all the way to the front of the park just to rent a locker. Anyone know the correct answer/procedure?

Do the water parks get all that crowded at the end of August? I dropped my wife and kids at Typhoon Lagoon once right after it opened and the parking lot didn't look all that busy. They have only been there one time, so not able to compare.
