Locked suitcases

Can you put locks onyour suitcase after your go through customs or might your luggage get picked by security to scanning an be opened. Do not want the locks to be cut open.
On the return I know it might be checked by TSA and I will put security ties on the suitcase instead of locks.

buy the tsa approved locks, they have keys to open them, and don't need to cut them off.

Get TSA approved locks, they can open them without cutting them, if they choose to. I never lock my suitcases and haven't had a problem, yet!

Not much point in locking. The only allowable locks are ones they can open.

We use the garbage metal twist ties. That's more to hold the two zippers together than anything else. I throw a few extra in the suitcase for the return trip. If they want to get in they'll get in so I figure why make it hard for them.

I use the TSA approved locks. Sure, the determined thief probably has the key that he pilfered from the TSA but the determined thief is going to steal from my bag whether it's locked or not. He's not who the lock is for. The lock is there to thwart the casual thief who sees my bag with the lock and decides instead to go to the one following it that has no lock.

I look at it this way. One night, my mom opened and left the garage door open without me knowing. The next morning, the car that sat outside with the doors locked wasn't burgled. MY car, sitting in the garage...NOT locked (it was in the garage!) got burgled. Don't give them the opportunity.

Any lock...not just the TSA ones but giant, strong padlocks are just there so that you don't give them an easy way in.

I had the TSA preferred locks, the kind with the code that they could unlock. They cut them off anyways. I guess they lost their key that day!

Yeah, a few years back we saw the TSA guys at LAX about to do that with our bags. They saw us watching them (as the bolt cutters came out) and asked if these were our bags and if we had the key. LOL We gave them our key and watched as they went through our bags. Then they closed them up, locked them and gave us back the key. If we hadn't been there.... snip snip.

Now, when I drop the bags off to be x-rayed, I always ask them if they have the key or if the locks are ok. If they say no, which hasn't happened yet, I'll take the locks off and put cable ties on. LOL

I use the plastic cable ties. I store the extras in the front puch of my checked baggage along with a set of nail clippers to use to cut them open. If for any reason your suitcase needs to be opened it provides easy access and the airport staff won't damage your locks......if you just use garbage bag twist ties, you'll never know if your suitcase has been searched or not.

I think I got ours at Walmart. I know I've also seen them at Sears, the Bay, and probably just about any place that sells luggage or locks.

Even though we had TSA locks on our luggage, when we returned home a lock on one of our bags had been cut. I could tell because they also almost cut our Disney luggage tag in half. I don't know where it happened but I'm assuming at MCO. So don't assume if you have a TSA lock that they won't cut it because they can and will if they don't have the key to open it.

I lock my suitcases with a TSA lock too. I bought new suitcases last year and the cable ties I have don't seem to fit through anymore. I lock them not to deter thieves but I guess I'm afraid of the zippers coming undone.
