Why would I want a 2 Br lock-off room vs a non-lock-off or visa versa?

What is the advantage / disadvantage of each?

thanks....

A lockoff will have a kitchenette in the studio portion and a second entrance to the hallway. The dedicated 2br will not have either of those.

A lock-off, in the 2nd BR, will have a queen bed and a sofa bed, except OKW which has 2 queens. Also each unit in the lock-off, 1 BR and Stu will have HVAC control.
Dedicated will have 2 queens, except for some of the BVC 2 BRs.

Some people dislike lockoffs when traveling with young children - or teens who might sneak out. There is a separate hallway door.

Some prefer them when traveling with other adults as the other adults basically get their own room with their own exterior door - which can let them come and go independently.

We do the Lock off because we travel with my in-laws and this gives them their "own" room, while still be connected to the kitchen/living area.

Also, be aware.

Generally lock offs have a queen and a sofa bed. Generally dedicated have two beds (some dedicateds at BCV have a sofa bed, the rooms are slightly smaller and couldn't fit two queens. There aren't sofa beds in any of the 2nd bedrooms at OKW).

Also, all two bedrooms at BWV are lockoffs - if you want BWV, you live with a lockoff. If you need a dedicated, you book a different resort.

They are booking categories.

I always book a non-lockoff when possible. I prefer that setup when traveling with DH and our 3 kids - extra closet in place of the door to outside, and possibly two queen beds instead of one queen and a sleeper sofa. I would book a lockoff, though, if I were traveling with another family, or down the road if traveling with adult children who may want to come and go on their own.

I was just deciding on this! Since we MIGHT have a family traveling with us, we are doing a lock off. If that family bails, we will have a 2bd for our small family -- we only have a 5 and 2 year old. It'll be a splurge if the other family backs out....

Historically DVC hasn't been willing to separate the L/O without a cancelation and rebooking but that hasn't been true consistently the last few years. If they bail, you might ask if you can break it apart without losing your reservation. Even if the points are in holding they have some value.

Oh thank you so much for that advice!!!

That would be amazing-- we usually get a 1bd.

Should my friend bail on me (80% chance), and they allow our room to be "broken up", I'm sure someone will be very happy to get a std studio at bwv and BLT during DVC's busiest time of the year ;). Otherwise we get a huge room, and my 2 and 5yr old will be very comfortable for 11 days. Lol.

The other alternative is to book them as separate components so you can cancel though it might be too late for this trip. You might go ahead to talk to MS about this so you know where you stand.

Trip is next December :) I'm planning ahead. Already walking my bwv reservation as per advice. BLT std seems easier get.

Booking date opens in 3 wks (January 1st).

I'd still discuss with them. I'd likely do it by email so you have a written record if they say you can split it. If you have enough points, one can really get creative. In this situation where you might need a 1 BR or 2 BR and the L/O split wasn't applicable, one could book a 1 BR, 2 BR and studio potentially then cancel any possible up to 31 days out. Or for some of us, if an exchange came through. This basic approach with enough points really gives options at the 7 month window as well trying to get more difficult to book options.
