Local Tragedy - What Would You Think?

The driver owned and operated the truck he drove. He was contracted to haul gravel to the construction site, as alot of them are. He admitted he did not stop. He admitted he was watching his rear view mirror more than he was watching for traffic on the road he was entering (perhaps he was expecting to get hit by an upcoming gravel truck?). He pled guilty and offered no excuses.

I think something like this means much more to parents who have teen drivers...rather than to parents whose children are still tucked safely in the seatbelt in Mom and Dad's back seat. Perspective has a tendency to change as kids get older....

If I were the parents--I would be begging the police station to put a few cops out there and pull over EVERY truck that doesn't stop.
That is exactly what these poor people have been doing. They and friends of the family also have to drive by the spot every day to get into town or back home. They report each and every truck they witness running that stop sign. On the news tonight, they said the officers would be sitting at the corner and fining people who run that sign this week. But, that is because this story has come to the forefront of the news again. In another 2 weeks, there will be no officers in sight, I am sure.

Based on the latest posts by robinb and mtbluejeans...

I have to say this guy got off easy...TOO easy.

He was negligent!

My drive shaft guy got off b/c it wasn't his company or his truck and the cop didn't feel the need to right him a ticket b/c he was assigned that truck on that day. Whole different ball of wax.

He needs to be sued...lose his truck...lose his CDL.

Owner or not, with a CDL, it is the drivers responsibility to make sure the equipment is safe to drive.

I don't know....so many emotions in cases like these. I don't see what purpose it would serve to have the guy serve 10 years in prison. It was an accident, a horrible, tragic accident.

It is not like the guy meant to kill her, he even tried to avoid her. I would also take a gander that he was just a driver for the dump-truck company and it would have been the owner's responsibility to maintain the brakes.

If we put everyone who ran or rolled a stop sign or light in prison.....there would be a whole lot of folks there. I prefer to see the hardened criminals in prison. JMHO.
I have to agree with this.
