Local Disney Store - no bags!!!

Google 'shopping bag lifecycle analysis' and you'll see various analyses conducted by the Environment Agency of England and their Danish counterpart.
That's life cycle, not degradability. Once you put your trash or dog poop in a plastic bag, it's estimated to take 500 years for the bag to degrade.

Look, you shop. Be prepared. If you want to be prepared by reusing your supermarket plastic bags, or your Disney plastic bags, or your reusable shopping bag, or your pockets, or your hands, or a box from the store - given that you shop, he prepared.

Yes, but when uptake increases, the reusable bags people are now forced to buy and use will take a long time to offset the equivalent of one plastic bag used once, while a plastic bag reused multiple times will increase the amount of times a reusable bag needs to be reused to break even. So while you are correct that I can reuse an existing bag, I still do not think overreach by taking away the democracy of choice is going to make any difference in the world. And what happens with reusable bags when they wear out?

No one is taking your choice away. No one is forcing you to use or purchase the paper bags, "multi-use" plastic bags, cloth or other available bags. You can still use single use plastic bags you just have to source them some place other than the grocery store.

You have choice. You can choose to not shop in stores, cities, and states which have enacted bag bans. Voila!
Don't be such a smart Alec. Bans can and will be opposed, especially when the pockets of the stores get hurt by being boycotted, or if there's competition, people will shop elsewhere. In the absence of both, they'll just shop online, like I've said previously.
That's what I've been trying to get at, but sadly, too many still think that bag bans are the final solution to all the plastic that's in the ocean.

If, as you claim, stores will be boycotted for not providing included bags, what happens in cities, towns states, even countries which ban disposable bags? California seems to be doing fine. It's not the fastest growing state, but its population continues to increase.

Oh, and providing choice when somebody erroneously complains about not having any? Not smart alec. Informative.

Well, I'll give exception to Costco, because it's their business model, and has always been their status quo since well before this banning fad has become fashionable, but this isn't Costco, this is the Disney Store we're talking about. The Disney Store is completely different to Costco because they do not provide shopping carts or boxes if you reject their overpriced dustcovers, and most people who go to one will always do it on a whim. Forcing overpriced reusable bags to an unsuspecting person catches them out, and does yield complaints, especially if it's in an area that doesn't have an ordinance or the ordinance exempts places like the Disney Store.

As for bag bans by jurisdiction, most are just minimum thickness laws, which are sometimes backed up by a tax, but more draconian bans like Kenya's are very rare, and are more commonly encountered in developing countries, where their economies function differently.

:confused3 I never mentioned Costco.

Protecting the environment, the planet, resources, for future generations isn't "fashionable". It's necessary.

It is the rare, rare, practically unicornish person who surprises themselves by suddenly and unexpectedly finds themselves in a retail venue, completely unprepared to exchange funds for merchandise.

Nobody is forcing anything on anyone. Don't want to bring or buy a bag? Don't. Carry the merchandise bagless. Ask for a box. Don't shop there.

Minimum thickness laws?? Where??? Who measures that??? The police? Health inspector? EPA?

Kenya's potential punishment is aimed primarily at manufacturers and distributors. If nobody makes plastic bags, and nobody sells plastic bags, individuals are unlikely to possess plastc bags.

Just get used to it. The whole country is moving towards this.

Even Kroger is getting rid of their plastic bags...I think they said they’re getting rid of them in 2 more years but you can Google it if you want.

A quick google said 2025. So a few more years than you said. And if it does happen, I'll just stop shopping there.

I'm not denying that. We all have a duty to protect the environment, but there are far better solutions than banning what is actually a useful piece of plastic that has a high chance of being reused. I just deem bans to be too faddy.

I refuse to. Do I want to get falsely accused of shoplifting by overzealous mall cops? The only time I’ll ever do that is when I’m only buying one thing and I’m heading straight to my car afterwards. I won’t do that when I buy multiple things and I intend on going to other stores straight afterwards.

Statutes and ordinances define what is a 'reusable bag' and what isn't. For example, California defines a reusable plastic bag as being of 2.25mil thickness, so in reality, it's not a ban in the true sense of the word, but a mandated standard that stores subject to the law have to adhere to if they still wish to use plastic. However, Oregon defines 4mil as reusable, so what might be one jurisdiction's reusable is another's 'single-use', so you'd still have a patchwork of legislation, even if a statewide one may seem to make the playing field more level.

Have you already stopped shopping at Disney Stores, Disney Parks and on Disney Cruises?

Shopping at retail is more difficult since some may not know exactly what, if anything, they will ultimately purchase. But a grocery store...everybody knows they are going in there and will be buying something. It’s not hard to keep bags in your car and take them inside with you to a store you know they’ll use them.

Yep. Just shop online and you won't have to worry about bag bans.
And then watch the shopping malls all close down. Like I've said previously, online shopping was already a threat, but a bag ban will only exacerbate their decline.

A supermarket is going to be more suitable for lugging around reusable bags, but a mall sure isn't going to be, so like you've said, it's more difficult in general retail than it is groceries.

While this is true you are, in general, going "shopping" if you are at the mall. Just grab a bag or two and not have to worry about if the stores have bags or not.
Maybe maybe not. There are def. times I plan to go out shopping but many more that I'm just out and about. I"m not always in my car and if I'm with my best friend or my mom lots of that is "hey did you want to go to so and so place".

And while some may enjoy just carrying around reusable bags on their person all the time so at any moment they can be used I'm not one of them. Only place I ever use a bag is when I know I'll be going to Aldi for just a few items. But rando shopping? Nah. Plus I have for the last few years been carrying small crossbody purses most of the time. There's no room there, def. no room in my jeans pocket (even those small ones as my phone usually barely fits), I'm not always wearing a jacket, etc to just always have one on my person and again I'm not always in my vehicle.

There are people who have zero problem accommodating bringing a reusable bag but not everyone is down with that and that's ok to feel that way. For people it can be an inconvenience even if to another person it's NBD.

 I am not sure that I know anyone who "enjoys" carrying bags around with them. It is just something we have to do. As I said it is the new "normal." I have a bag of bags in my trunk at all times.

If I happen to randomly go shopping (not likely, as it is not something I do for fun) and I don't have a bag. I know I will either need to carry the items or buy a bag. It is the new normal, just the way it is.
