Why not? Are you too young to remember when practically every packaged food did come in cardboard or tin-foil or wax paper or unlined cans or glass containers? It's only really been in the past 30 years or so that everything comes in plastic packaging. Or should I say over-packaging. Plastic containers inside cardboard boxes then shrink-wrapped or bubble-packaged. There's layer upon layer upon layer on many items.
And the fact they are much cheaper.
I use reuseable bags for grocery shopping. I'm not going to lug them around when walking around the mall.
Once upon a time stores did in fact give a discount for bringing in your own bags. Once local governments decide to “ban” one time use bags, that discount went away.
Our grocery stores give a 5c discount per bag if you bring your own.
Ours used to. Now you either bring your own or pay 10cents for a paper or reusable plastic bag. The fee is determined by a local ordinance not the store.
The exact year here was 1985. I had my first part-time job as a grocery store cashier and we spent days training for the transition. It was actually kind of tough because there was a bit of an art to properly packing a paper grocery grocery bag so the corners were square and the bottom stayed flat and it stood up, and baggers prided themselves on their precision. People hated the plastic bags, hated them.
When shopping at Publix I get paper. And they don’t charge.
How so? Prices didn't go down on anything once the bag fee was implemented.
Some do. My Target does.
I have some that fold into neat little squares. They’re very easy to toss in your handbag/backpack or put in your pocket or on a keychain. No lugging involved.
