Local bands from my younger years (anyone else remember?)

I loved the Hooters and Kix! I actually still have cassette tapes from them, and I do listen to them still.

A very popular band where I grew up in Ohio was the Michael Stanley Band. I also still have cassettes from them that I listen to. When I moved to Florida, I was amazed no one knew who they were.

I spent part of the first half of the eighties in Hollywood Rock'n Roll clubs with friends following around bands such as "Warrant" before they hit the big time. Ohhh, those were the days.

I don't remember the name of the band at Hammerjacks, but they had a guy that could sing "Cult of Personality" just like the lead singer Living Colour. We would go crazy when they played.

Hammerjacks was such a good bar back in the day. They would have college night once a week which was great for me, but then they changed the style of the place and the crowd that they were catering to and it was never the same. I liked it when it was a rough and tumble crowd. I miss it

I remember the Hooters--named after a keyboard/trumpet hybrid instrument employed in their concerts--and have all their albums (except Amore) on CD. When I was a senior at Lycoming College, Williamsport, PA, in 1985, I actually played pinball in the Wertz Student Center with Eric Bazilian (who played a solo show on May 5, 2000, promoting his CD The Optimist, at The Point in Bryn Mawr, PA, a suburb west of Philly). A DJ on the college radio station in 1985, I played several Hooters songs and promo'd the band's November 16, 1985 concert at the Lamade Gym. What great memories!

I used to love the Good Rats and Twisted Sister, both used to play often at Hammerheads in West Islip NY.

I didn't live in PA in the 80s so the bands mentioned don't ring a bell. However the Badlees were a local band from the mid 90s that were "this close" to making it big. They were on the verge of being national and had a music video with Julianna Margolouis (really botched the spelling of her name). We have all of their CDs and still listen to them often. They still play locally. It is too bad they couldn't make it. They actually lived on the same street as we did when they were starting out and were a really nice bunch of guys.

Ok, you probably have to 1) be old enough to remember the 80s and 2) lived in PA, NJ, NY, MD - but I was thinking today of some of the great local bands I loved in my late teens/early 20s. I think each of my favs achieved some level of national success...Does anybody remember these...

The Hooters - probably the most successful. I just downloaded some of their old tunes from Napster. What memories - they were fantastic. What ever happened to them?

They still do gigs in the Philly area every now and then. Usually it's either for charity or some sort of Pierre Robert/WMMR thing. I LOVED that band. I actually worked for them for a bit, nice, nice nice guys. Eric is writing scores for soundtracks, and I can't remember exactly but Rob is doing something with music still as well.

Tommy Conwell and the Young Rumblers - I think Tommy's still doing stuff.

Tommy still plays out in the Philly area and hosts "Loud and Local" (I think that's the name of it) for WMMR--or YSP--can't recall which.

The Sharks - this one is a longshot but I'd love to know if anyone remembers these guys. I was a total groupie to the extent that I could be, since I was only 16-18 or so and couldn't do the "real" clubs. These guys actually won an MTV basement band competition and did at least one record with a bigger label. I still own all of their records, but alas cannot play them! I searched the net and found that Shea Quinn still plays in a local band, but the Sharks have actually done a reuinion show and maybe will do another. I am SO there if they do!

There were several bands by the same name. One was a horn band up in Albany who often worked with Blotto.

Back in the early 80s (1981-1983), I was predominantly "clubbing" in Northern VA, DC, and southern Maryland.

We used to follow around a band called Monarch. There were some others but, honestly, I'm having a hard time coming up with the names.

Geez Louise!! That's another blast from the past. I actually mentioned Jeff on another thread ont hese boards recently. And you reminded me that I need to return a call from his sister. Do you remember Todd who used to be on thier crew? If so, PM me for some news. Mark (AD) lives out west in AZ now. Not sure about the other guys.

If you were a Monarch fan you probably also remember Teachers Pet and DC Star--I have no idea what happened to any of them, and Wrathchild--drummer Shannon Larkin now plays with Godsmack.

What about The Kix? They were big in the early-mid 80's. They actually played a club outside of Hagerstown on NYE this year. I just googled them and found this website for them http://www.chuckjoiner.com/kix/kix.html

Blow My Fuse! LOL! They put out at least three CD's--we've got them all. They were signed to Atlantic but never really achieved major sales. They were really better suited as a bar band as far as their live show went.

I dont remember those, but I remember Twisted Sister.

They just did a short tour in support of their Christmas CD release. I got a copy of it, but haven't listened to it--I actually fished it out of my editors garbage can and brought it home for my son. Dee Schneider is a DJ on a Philly station (WYSP?) I think.

The Kix used to play at Hammerjacks outside of Baltimore in the 80's. It was always an "event".

The Hooters were kind of big for their collaboration with Cyndi Lauper. On "Time After Time" they played...their...Hooters

Actually they WROTE the song, she made it into a hit.

Ok, this is my first post on the Community Board, but just curious if anyone remembers the local band the Nerds. You would have to live in PA/NJ area. I believe that they still play. I remember seeing them at the Barn (I believe that was the place in Bensalem) also down at LBI all the time. I would love to drop my mommy life for a day and go to a bar to see them again and possibly even try to drink the same amount of alcohol that I could back then! Oh, the good ole' days.....

I remember the Nerds!

Oh my god! I loved Mazarin! I saw them all the time. There was a club called "Rock-a-way" and they played there alot. I had a kind of crush on the organist ( is that what you call the keyboard guy?) He was soo cute-like a teddy bear!!

And of course Doug was the lead-he was your standard hottie!

They use to perform covers of Hot Tuna or Jorma Kaukonen songs. They also did a killer version of "Tempted". What was the single they made?

I'm desperately searching for info on an old American rock band called MONARCH. They're supposed to have released an album in '83 called "As your kingdom falls". Is this the band you have been mentioning in this thread? If it is, could someone PLEASE get in touch with me w/ more info. I'm dying to hear this band.

...and if it's not the band I'm looking for, please let me know too, so I can scratch this lead from the list

These all sound familiar. When I first moved to Hagerstown, Kix was all the rage and a coworker had dated one of the band members, lol.

I've forgotten more Long Island acts than I remember, but here are some good ones:

Good Rats. They'd perform as the Rat Race Choir to do gigs in small clubs at the height of their popularity. Peppi Marchello was good friends with my eldest sister and he is my nephew's godfather. Biggest hit they had was "Tasty"

Blue Oyster Cult-Always performed on LI as Soft White Underbelly.

Mazarin-great bar band, never understood why they hadn't made it big.

Another Philly band--Tangier. They were signed to ATCO and their label folded at the end of the first tour to support their second CD--after they replaced the lead singer and lost a guitarist.

The second singer, Mike LeCompt has a band called LeCompt and still plays around Philly and the Jersey shore. One of the other guys in the band was in either Britny Fox or Cinderella.

The bass player from LeCompt Gary Nutt is down here in Florida playing in a band--I want to think they do a lot of southern rock--I ahven't seen them.

Somewhere in this house is a rubber rat that my husband had hanging in his office for many, many years. He got it from the Good Rats. Every now and then it surfaces when one of the kids unearths it from a pile of toys.

Other LI bands: Little Buster, Foghat (remember them?), also the Little Wilson Band.

My husbands favorite bar band was a group called The Truth Band. Not sure if they were a Jersey based or NY based band though.
