Ok, you probably have to 1) be old enough to remember the 80s and 2) lived in PA, NJ, NY, MD - but I was thinking today of some of the great local bands I loved in my late teens/early 20s. I think each of my favs achieved some level of national success...Does anybody remember these...

The Hooters - probably the most successful. I just downloaded some of their old tunes from Napster. What memories - they were fantastic. What ever happened to them?

Tommy Conwell and the Young Rumblers - I think Tommy's still doing stuff.

The Sharks - this one is a longshot but I'd love to know if anyone remembers these guys. I was a total groupie to the extent that I could be, since I was only 16-18 or so and couldn't do the "real" clubs. These guys actually won an MTV basement band competition and did at least one record with a bigger label. I still own all of their records, but alas cannot play them! I searched the net and found that Shea Quinn still plays in a local band, but the Sharks have actually done a reuinion show and maybe will do another. I am SO there if they do!

Aaah, memories. Back when music was good for a three buck cover charge and you didn't have to take out a loan for babysitting, beverages, and parking (except that time I got towed!)

ckay, The Hooters seem to ring a bell with me.

Back in the early 80s (1981-1983), I was predominantly "clubbing" in Northern VA, DC, and southern Maryland.

We used to follow around a band called Monarch. There were some others but, honestly, I'm having a hard time coming up with the names. :crazy2:

yep I remember and have seen the first two. Not sure about the last band. Sounds familiar. Around here the first two groups got radio airplay too.

I dont remember those, but I remember Twisted Sister.

I remember the Hooters, but not the others -- except for Twisted Sister of course.

Hooters
» And We Danced

She was a be-bop baby on a hard day's night.
She was hangin' on Johnny
he was holdin' on tight.
Oh
I could feel her coming from a mile away.
There was no use talking
there was nothing to say
When the band began to play and play -
And we danced
like a wave on the ocean
romanced.
We were liars in love and we danced
Swept away for a moment by chance.
And we danced and danced and danced.
I met my be-bop baby at the Union hall.
She could dance all night and shake the paint off the wall.
But when I saw her smile across a crowded room
Well
I knew we have to leave the party soon.
As the band began to play out of tune -
And we danced
like a wave on the ocean
romanced. . . .
And we danced -
The endless beat
she's walkin' my way
Hear the music fade when she says:
Are we getting too close
do we care to get closer?
The room is spinning as she whispers my name.
And we danced
like a wave on the ocean
romanced. . . .
And we danced
like a wave on the ocean
romanced. . . .
And danced and danced and danced and danced and danced -
And we danced
and we danced
and we danced
and we danced
And danced and danced and danced and danced and danced

What about The Kix? They were big in the early-mid 80's. They actually played a club outside of Hagerstown on NYE this year. I just googled them and found this website for them http://www.chuckjoiner.com/kix/kix.html

A friend of mine who lives outside of Baltimore just saw them a few weeks ago!

My favorite local band is Fighting Gravity - formerly known as Boy O Boy.

Dave Matthews was a local band here for a long time, before he it big.

Didn't they sing "Red Shoes" and "The Itch"?
Definitely The Itch - not sure about Red Shoes.

"Kix are for kids!"

The Kix used to play at Hammerjacks outside of Baltimore in the 80's. It was always an "event".

Suzi

Man the Kix sound so familiar too

The Hooters were kind of big for their collaboration with Cyndi Lauper. On "Time After Time" they played...their...Hooters :rotfl2:

Yup. Monarch for me, too. I lived in Rockville at the time.

I bet you were aware of them. The lead singer and his brother went to high school in Montgomery County. That's how I *hooked* up with them. My best friend in college went to high school with them. They were HOT!!

Oh! I just thought of another: Crack the Sky.

She had red shoes!
I couldn't believe
And a high-heel smile
Just lookin' at me...

Or, who could forget...
Surf City, here come the sharks
Dodge City, here come the lights

OMG! They were one of my favorites. I bet I still have a CD somewhere.

ETA: Hold on, I'm second guessing myself about Red Shoes. Who can help? Anyone?

Having spent most of my youth in suburban Philly, I remember the Hooters well, my favorite song being "All You Zombies."

Yep, ol' Dave Matthews was considered a local boy around here in VA. Look at him now!

Oh, right! I had forgotten about that. I think the guy was a few years ahead of me at Magruder. I could be wrong, but I know they were really big with my "group."

Ok, this is my first post on the Community Board, but just curious if anyone remembers the local band the Nerds. You would have to live in PA/NJ area. I believe that they still play. I remember seeing them at the Barn (I believe that was the place in Bensalem) also down at LBI all the time. I would love to drop my mommy life for a day and go to a bar to see them again and possibly even try to drink the same amount of alcohol that I could back then! Oh, the good ole' days.....

I had a huge crush on Ronnie Younkins as he was good friends with my oldest brother and at our house lots. I was probably 14 or so and just ga ga over him. I remember the first time I heard The Itch on the radio and told all my friends "I know them, I know them". No one believed me.

Didn't they write True Colors and co-write Time after Time for Cyndi Lauper?, so maybe they're sill writing?

Saw them open up for someone at The Fox in Atlanta, can't remember who, yeesh, I'm old, LOL.
